Acquired: 2108 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall broad shouldered lefthander. Good strength in upper half with some projection remaining in his lower half. Athletic mover on the mound, soft body should require maintenance long term.

Delivery & Mechanics: Athletic delivery, lower half moves gracefully from side step to full extension. Starts wind up with side step, quick leg lift and slight pause before fire. Arm raises during pause and prior to drive and extension. Higher three-quarters to over-the-top arm slot, makes for a higher release point, slight crossbody finish. Does a good job of repeating, some stress at the point of release but overall a lower effort operation.

Fastball: Rolison's average fastball sits around 90-92 mph and will touch 94-95 mph at its hottest. Average spin rates in the 2200-2300 range, and an induced vertical break of 17.2 inches. Metrically it's a fringe average fastball, but Rolison's ability to control and command the pitch allows it to settle in at an average grade overall. Works both sides of the plate and has the ability to work north to south. Velocity plays up due to above average extension of six feet eight inches. Grade: 50

Curveball: The best pitch in Rolison's arsenal. The secondary he has the greatest feel for and the pitch he goes to most frequently in two-strike counts. A near 11-5 spin direction with -8 inches of induced vertical break. Good velocity at 79-82 mph. Above average to plus raw spin rates in the 2800+ range. Command is above average, will get slurvy at times and will be prone to hangers. Release differential is noticeable from other pitches. It's a plus pitch based on feel and movement. Grade: 60

Slider: Heavy gyro spin pitch with little to no vertical or horizontal movement. Used as third pitch mostly versus lefthanders. Harder than the curveball at an average velocity of 82-85 mph, with a lower spin rate of 2100 rpms. Has feel for the pitch and will land it for strikes. Clearly behind his curveball. Grade: 40

Changeup: Rolison will land the pitch for strikes versus righthanders with regularity. Minimal run but he kills lift and spots it well, selling the pitch with arm speed. Not a great changeup but a usable pitch in the lefthander's arsenal. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Rolison has been a consistent strike thrower since his junior season at Mississippi. This trend has continued in pro ball where his 7.2 BB% over 160 professional innings tells the tale. Possesses above average command of his fastball and curveball combination and his changeup shows average feel. His command issues manifest less in missing the zone and more so in missing up in the zone. Not surgical but above average control and average command. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Coming off of his junior season at Ole Miss many believed Rolison had the potential for three above average or better pitches with a starter's command profile. While some of that is true, his fastball is truly just average and his curveball is his only consistently above average offering. He throws strikes, gets ahead in counts, generates a fair amount of swing and miss and works efficiently. It's a starter profile with little question. How his movement profile and average fastball play in Colorado is another story. Without question I'd be more excited about Rolison's potential in a more progressive pitching organization.
