Dec 2020 Report
Evaluator: Geoff Pontes
Age: 21 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible
Physical Description: Average build with high waist and room for projection long term. Somewhat uncoordinated. Should require minimal maintenance long term.
Hit: Huge leg kick gets deep into his back hip, long bat path with uppercut path. Extremely high swing and miss profile with a ton of risk attached to his ability to make contact. First taste of stateside ball with the Dodgers Mota AZL squad saw two outcomes. Loud contact and louder whiffs. At the present time Diaz's hit and approach are notably 20 grade. His plus power at the point of contact and some faith in the Dodgers player dev gets him to a 30 hit. Grade: 30
Power: Well known raw power throughout his time with the organization. Posts top line exit velocities over 110+ mph. Showed power in game for the first time in the AZL during his 2019 campaign. The data and swing path say that it's legit. His ability to get to it in game with consistency however is a problem due to his poor hitting and approach. While it's an easy raw power plus, it's simply an above average projected tool at present. Grade: 55
Field: Very poor defensive profile, drops routine balls off of his glove with poor reads off of the bat. Bad transfers, very upright defensive movements. Had an error in every game during our looks. Long term first base profile at best. Grade: 20
Arm: Below average arm will not play at third long term, arm is probably adequate for first base. Grade: 40
Run: Above average runner with speed on the bases and high success rate of stealing. Speed may translate to a move to the outfield. Grade: 50
Overall: It's a total power profile, with big raw leading the way with Diaz. He's extremely limited defensively, and his bat to ball skills are rough at present. If he can improve in that regard and get to more of his raw power he has the kind of strength to wedge his way into a potential DH role. The risk is as extreme as it comes, with a very high probability the profile never materializes.
