Apr 2021 Report
Evaluator: Geoff Pontes
Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021
Physical Description: above-average height. Solidly built is mostly physically maxed out. Has some additional room for upper-body strength. High waisted.
Hit: Stands slightly crouched. Starts with the bat on his shoulder but gets his hands high and back as he loads. Uses a moderate leg kick as his timing mechanism. Keeps his weight on his back foot and transfers that weight with a rotational swing that generates some natural loft off the bat. Wide base at impact helps him drive the ball when he barrels it. It's a linear swing that is capable of getting the ball in the air. Pairs above-average bat speed with innate bat-to-ball skills; fights off pitches and puts the ball in play often. Patient approach and sometimes too much so. Shows a feel for the zone and knows when to lay off pitches. Does not chase often, but has a tendency to overswing. Struggled against lefties in 2019 in a small sample; does appear to be more comfortable facing righties. Has above-average bat-to-ball skills and his hit tool as a whole could be above-average in time with further refinement. He has a present contact-oriented approach. Grade: 50
Power: Above-average or better raw power, particularly to the pull side. Gets the ball in the air, but it's mostly to the gaps during games. Began using the whole field with more regularity in 2019. Already uses his lower body well and he has a rotational swing; both indicate future power growth but it may come at the expense of his hit tool. Would do well to find pitches to drive. Grade: 50
Field: Moves well enough in the field to give hope he can stick at 3B, but he only has fringe-average lateral quickness. Keeps the ball in front of him and charges with authority, but his glove work is still unrefined. Struggles with errors at times. Below-average range at 3B that plays up because of his awareness. Added weight would decrease his range even further. Can make some difficult plays because of his arm talent, but the overall package is still fringey. Could face a move across the diamond at some point in his development. Grade: 45
Arm: Strong arm with good carry across the infield. Throws from a low 3/4 slot. Quick arm. Shows comfort in throwing to 2B and 1B. Makes some difficult throws to 1B while charging the ball. Will drop his arm to a low sidearm to get the ball out quickly. Quick transfers. Arm fits at 3B. Grade: 60
Run: Timed 4.29 down the line from the left side. Not a threat to steal, but does show good awareness on the base paths. Grade: 40
Overall: Toribio offers an intriguing skillset because of his bat-to-ball skills, but he's yet to produce the power coveted at a corner infield spot. He does flash above-average or better raw power, so there is some hope he'll grow into it as he progresses in his development. He has the makings of a future second-division regular at 3B, but he'll need to work hard to stick there and avoid a platoon or bench role.
