Dec 2020 Report
Evaluator: Russ Peters
Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2018 Round 3
RuleV: 2021
Physical Description: Strong, sturdy, well built, broad shoulders with thick lower half. Workhorse build.
Delivery & Mechanics: 3/4 arm slot, creates steep down hill plane with arm slot and height. Hides the ball well. Consistently repeats up tempo delivery. Delivery is balanced, controlled and fairly mechanically sound.
Fastball: Topped out at 96 in college but has regressed to working 87-91. Excellent downhill plane and slight deception help the lack of velocity. Fairly straight trajectory. Would benefit from added velo and/or life Grade: 45
Curveball: 12-6 drop, sometimes becomes slurvy. 75-77 MPH with medium depth, lacks some of the bite you'd prefer. Used as a chase pitch or for called strikes. Grade: 50
Slider: Fringe average offering at 83-84 MPH. Can sometimes blend into shape and velocity band of slurvy curve ball. Pilkington adds and subtracts from his curve and slider well to create the desired effect. Would benefit from added teeth when necessary. Grade: 45
Changeup: Pilkington's best secondary. Shows good feel with glove-side fade. 80-82 MPH. Works well as swing and miss/out pitch or to induce weak contact. Grade: 55
Control and Command: Definitely a strike-thrower but has not exhibited consistent ability to spot pitches as desired. Room for each of these to move up a half grade in the future. Control: 50 | Command: 45
Overall: Once an overpowering pitcher, Pilkington now relies on pitchibility and keeping hitters off balance for success. Uses three fringe or better secondaries to keep hitters from timing up a marginal fastball. Proven to be strong and durable. Floor over ceiling prospect at this point. Best case scenario is 4/5 SP innings eatier but the Sox may use him as a swingman/long reliever/spot starter as well.
