Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 218 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 3
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Average but sturdy build. Fits listed numbers. Mature frame with little projection remaining. Athletic, higher waist, longer limbs. Typical starter build.

Delivery & Mechanics: Windup; tall and fall delivery; over the top arm slot with average arm speed and moderate effort. Average extension; standard deception.

Fastball: 92-94, t97; primarily uses a sinker with solid run and depth. High release helps create steeper downward plane. Works it down and to both sides of the plate, but some leak over the heart. Gets some swing and miss, but mostly groundballs and weak contact. Occasionally utilizes a four seam up in the zone which can get whiffs with decent ride and some run. Enough velo and movement to stay off most barrels, but will get squared up over the heart. Grade: 55

Curveball: 77-81; Vertical, 12-6 shape with solid depth and bite and will sometimes have some sweep to it. Flashes plus but generally inconsistent. Best and most-used secondary but plays down; stark contrast from sinker telegraphs the pitch and makes it easy for hitters to attack or lay off. Can throw it for strikes, but leaves it in the zone and up too often. Grade: 45

Changeup: 87-89; Fringey tumble and fade. Used sparingly. A little too firm at times, looks like a bad sinker. Does a solid job keeping it down, just lacks feel for it at present. A work in progress that has improved in pro ball but isn't a reliable weapon yet. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Average strike-thrower, typically around the zone but will walk guys. Generally efficient, but has trouble finishing off some hitters which leads to higher pitch counts and walks. Needs to work the edges to have success; balls left over the heart give up loud contact. Fringey, overall, but enough to get the job done in a starting role. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Out-getter with potential for a tick more if his arsenal is optimized. Standard innings-eater mold that induces more weak contact than whiffs. If the slider sticks and matches the quality of the curve, it should help the strikeout ability tick up since it would pair much better with the sinker's movement profile. Upside here is a backend #5-type starter and the low end is long relief. Good candidate for a bulk role where his stuff would tick up and he wouldn't need to turn over a lineup.
