Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: If you wanted to physically build a starter in the lab, Greene is the prototype. Impressive athleticism. Large frame. Wiry strength. Broad shoulders. Strong upper body, core and lower half. Mostly filled out ML body with a little room left to add strength. Tommy John Surgery: 04/2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Clean, simple delivery. Standard 3/4 arm slot. Easy effort; impressive arm speed. Curiously works from the middle of the rubber. Chest high leg kick, gets into back leg and lower half well. Gets good hip and torso to shoulder separation. Has slowed down the start of his wind up over the last year from a very quick leg kick and break to a more moderate leg kick and better paced wind up. His long arm swing which led to inconsistent release point at times is now a much shorter, compact motion. Better lead leg action in 2020 bullpens compared to 2018. Very good extension with long back foot toe drag as he squares his body to home and brings the arm behind.

Fastball: Explosive pitch with elite velocity. Sits 96-99 consistently and can hit 102.Modest arm-side run, predominantly flat at upper velo. Downward plane low in the zone thanks to his delivery and slot. Extension pads overall quality of the offering. Overpowers in the zone; moderate swing and miss. Fills the zone with strikes. Misses are up in the zone and glove side. Grade: 70

Curveball: Low usage fourth offering. Inconsistent shape. 75-79 mph with 11/5 shape when he snaps it off correctly; mostly a show-me offering. Can throw it for strikes, but not a competitive pitch other than to vary looks. Average control; below-average command. Grade: 45

Slider: Best secondary offering. Sits 84-87 with tight two-plane break. Shows good vertical drop and late horizontal tilt. Thrown for strikes and utilized in and out of the zone, has impressive confidence back-dooring it on LHB. Grade: 55

Changeup: Sits 85-88 with optimal velocity separation from FB. Has feel; maintains arm speed. Features downward action and great fade. Tough swing and miss pitch against LHB. Sits average; flashes above-average. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Aggressive strike thrower; fills the zone with quality strikes. Command of secondary offerings lag behind FB. Moves the ball around the zone well. Deep arsenal and moderate pitchability avoid predictable sequencing. Shortened arm swing, clean, low effort delivery and athleticism should yield future above-average command. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: With the physical build, low effort delivery, and three potentially above-average or better pitches, Greene has the ingredients and projection of a top of the rotation starter, with ace potential. The more realistic future role is an impact mid-rotation SP. He's already had Tommy John, but the shortening of his arm swing and better pace of his delivery should help improve his command long term. The road back from injury won't be easy, but always bet on the athlete with high-end velocity and two above-average secondaries - especially with the kind of work ethic and character that Greene exhibits.
