Dec 2020 Report
Evaluator: Anthony Franco
Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: 2022
Physical Description: Heavyset for most of his time in college, deserves plenty of credit for reshaping his body. Still a big guy, listed at 6'3," 215 pounds, but with a much more toned physique. Tall, thick frame; muscular upper body. Physically maxed out.
Hit: Slightly open stance, hands behind head. Big leg kick. Long, sweepy bat path. Swing is a bit disjointed, as he transfers weight onto his front leg early; that can leave him susceptible to offspeed stuff and drives a pull-heavy approach. Below-average bat control; concerning amount of swing-and-miss in the strike zone. Average strike zone awareness. Grade: 30
Power: Has plus, strength-driven raw power. Can generate authoritative pull-side contact even when his hitting timing is off. Flatter plane on swing could affect his ability to get to all of his raw power in games. Grade: 55
Field: Has played primarily third base in college and minors but likely projects to first at major league level; below-average athlete who probably gets pushed off third by a rangier defender. Grade: 40
Arm: Big arm strength that is more than sufficient for third base if his range proves sufficient to stay there. Grade: 60
Run: Below-average runner due to his size. Grade: 40
Overall: Having just turned 22, Lewis is young for a 2019 college draftee. He's strong enough to drive balls with authority, thanks largely to a ton of work to reshape his body, which reflects well on his future work ethic. That profile makes him more interesting than most fourth-round picks, but Lewis' most likely future remains as a power-hitting bench bat. He figures to run high strikeout rates throughout his career because he doesn't have great natural timing or bat control at the plate. For a player who might wind up limited to first base, that's probably not enough to play every day.
