Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Strong, thick frame; bottom-heavy with XL hips and thighs. Has outgrown listed weight. Muscle on the frame, but not lean. Built like a catcher. Mostly maxed out; some room for weight in the chest and shoulders. Conditioning will be a factor.

Hit: Square stance with hands head-high; Mostly upright with shoulder-width base. Active hands pre-load; low leg lift used for trigger with slight hand load. Steeper swing path with average bat speed. Aggressive swinger, not very selective in the zone and will expand on spin. Slugger approach looking to pull everything, but can go the other way with authority when he chooses. Some swing and miss in the zone and a bit of a grooved swing limit hit tool's upside. Solid feel for zone; will take a walk. Grade: 40

Power: Plus raw power from strong body and average bat speed. Lofted swing path helps get the ball in the air, but swing and miss keeps power from maximizing in games. All fields over the fence pop. Lack of speed will keep him from taking bases except on balls to the wall. Grade: 45

Field: Solid receiver. Fluid movements behind the plate; leans to receive the ball within the body. Quicker feet and actions than expected, but not "quick". Moves the body for most block attempts, but will stab instead of smothering and miss the ball. Hustles down the line to back up first. Heady player that will nab stray runners on back picks and delayed steals. Leader on the field. Grade: 50

Arm: 2.06, 1.97, 1.91, 1.84, 1.77 pop times. Flashes double plus pop times, but not consistent and sometimes only average. Accurate throws, keeps the ball down. A weapon that will keep runners honest. Grade: 60

Run: 4.51 H-1st. Accelerates quickly but top speed is very limited. Mostly station to station. Can advance on plays where he should, but nothing more. Not a stolen base threat. Grade: 30

Overall: Average defensive catcher with a plus or better arm and enough power to do damage. Defense and power combination is enough for a 3rd catcher floor, but most likely earns a backup role. Could be a regular if the hit tool ticks up or the defense takes a step forward.
