Nov 2020 Report
Evaluator: Geoff Pontes
Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022
Physical Description: Tall broad-shouldered frame with room for plenty of projectable muscle and good weight. Should add 15-20 lbs naturally as he matures. Has some quick twitch athleticism and looks as though his physique should require little maintenance over time.
Hit: Showcased a mature approach and above average bat to ball ability as a 19 year old in the Pioneer League. He sets up with a slightly open stance, employing an accentuated leg lift trigger, before drawing his hands back in load. Displays above average bat speed and at least average control of the barrel. A little tilt in his torso as he starts separation, handsy, but he does a good job of firing his hips and staying on time. Above average plate approach for a teenager. Will work counts, spoil off pitches on the black and rarely strikes out. Above average bat to ball skills exemplified by his 77% contact rate in 2019. Still has yet to be exposed to high level pitching, with some mechanical quirks he could have issues with advanced spin. Should he prove otherwise he bumps half a grade. Grade: 45
Power: Average power, has shown the ability to drive the ball deep to all parts of the field. Best contact comes in the form of screaming line drives to his pull side. Plus bat speed, and a projectable muscular frame hint to untapped power upside. For now he shows the ability to turn on pitches on the inner half and punish mistakes. Has shown power in game across multiple stops. Grade: 50
Field: Athletic defender with the ability to develop into a difference maker at the corner. Moves well laterally with a quick first step and sound technical footwork. His hands are average and inconsistent, making a great play and following up with a poor scoop or transfer. It shows flashes of an above average profile, but as a 19 year old in advanced rookie ball it still has a ways to go to fully manifest. Grade: 50
Arm: Strong throwing arm with accuracy across the diamond. Gets good zip on off balanced throws and runners. Good mechanics, keeps shoulders square to target with quick arm speed. Grade: 60
Run: Above average runner at present that will flirt with plus home-to-first times. Likely to lose as step as he ages and adds some bulk. Shows inconsistent instincts at times in the bases. Has a tendency to become over aggressive as a runner. A squarely above average runner for now. Grade: 55
Overall: A tooled up talent and one of the better prospects in the lower levels of the Colorado system. A bat that blends above average contact and average power with a projectable long term defensive role. There's certainly a fair amount of risk attached to the profile, as Carreras is yet to see full-season ball. It's hard to ignore the package of skills that can produce a legitimate everyday player. However, there's still a significant amount of growth needed before we can comfortably project an everyday outcome.
