Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 3, HOU
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Typical catcher frame; sturdy with wide shoulders and hips; thick, strong legs with minimal strength gains remaining throughout. Smooth and agile movements behind the plate; 6'1" and 192 pound list appear accurate.

Hit: Open stance with a wide base; hands start at the letters with bat on the shoulder. Load featured a high and pronounced leg kick but recently switched to a more conventional slide step. Approach revolves around all-or-nothing swings; bat stays in the zone very little time due to forward hands and uppercut finish. Works counts to find a pitch to drive; will walk but also strike out often due to approach. Shows ability to lay off spin below the zone. Grade: 40

Power: Conscious effort to put the ball in the air; good lift for power. Leg kick and high finish have yielded average home run totals throughout minor leagues and figure to remain average due to contact issues and limited physical projection remaining. Home run power almost exclusively to the pull field. Grade: 50

Field: Confident, plus defender; moves well behind the plate; steady and reliable defense. Glove instincts; soft hands receiving with good framing ability; glove is quiet and presents borderline pitches well. Uncharacteristic struggles defensively in small sample at MLB level--track record of defense in minors suggests it was mental. Grade: 60

Arm: Elite arm capable of making every throw expected of a catcher accurately; an absolute cannon for an arm behind the plate. Quick release on stolen base attempts; pop times range between double plus and elite-1.91-1.95; strong arm and textbook throwing mechanics. Grade: 80

Run: Well below-average running ability; station-to-station and not a base- stealing threat. Typical runner for a catcher. Grade: 30

Overall: Defense and arm carry the profile; role will hinge on ability to make more contact at the plate. Framing is valuable currently but would be negated by an automated zone in the future. Floor is a journeyman back-up but may start long-term if his recent changes with approach yield more consistent contact.
