Physical Description: Extremely tall, high waisted frame. Very long levers with substantial room for growth in his entire frame. Nowhere near fully matured physically, and should add more strength as he gets older and fills out. Overall built like a blue-chip power forward recruit coming out of high school.

Mechanics: Perez utilizes an old school over-the-head windup working into a fluid, high leg kick. Creates easy extension down the mound due to a long lower half and shows extremely advanced body control through his athletic finish, especially out of a 6-8 frame. Arm action is on the shorter side and works a ton of deception out of a lower ¾ arm slot. Maintains quality arm speed throughout his outings and puts minimal stress on the elbow with a very loose follow through. Wastes little time in between pitches, and likes to control the pace of an AB. Ability to get into his lower half and repeat his delivery are very impressive for his age.

Fastball: 93-96 T97; Creates easy mid to upper-90s velocity out of his delivery and even more to project as he adds weight. Mixes in a four seam and sinker, and will throw the fastball as his primary pitch. Perez is able to get natural sink and arm side run on both pitches and shows elite level feel to spin with his RPMs averaging over 2600. Will work primarily east to west at the top of the zone with the four seam then mix in the bowling ball sinker to change the eye level. Very effective at creating soft contact, especially with upper tier velocity. Rarely will miss over the heart of the plate, and shows above-average command throughout the strike zone. Grade: 60

Curveball: 77-83; Breaking ball is a power curveball that will usually sit in the low-80s in outings and best present swing-and-miss pitch. Shape has tightened up into a near 11/5 break and gets a ton of late break and depth. Perez has the ability to manipulate some extra sweep to the pitch when looking to get a hitter to chase as well, giving the pitch some slurvy elements at times. Will pepper the prep inside and outside edges with this pitch, working throughout the zone. Above-average to plus command to throw this pitch in any count and frequently will work backwards starting an AB with a first pitch curveball. Another pitch take I've yet to see squared up on multiple looks as well. Grade: 55

Changeup: 87-89; Perez has an innate feel for a changeup that has flashed as potentially a plus pitch down the road. It’s firm in the upper-80s but plays well off of the fastball. Gets late glove side tumble that’s devastating to LHH. Will get most of the swing and miss with this pitch when elevated, mimicking the fastball. Command is overall spotty, mostly with the low usage of the pitch currently. Will mostly miss low and outside, but very rarely a meatball. Had some trouble maintaining arm speed early in the year, but improved greatly. Grade: 50

Control and Command: The ability to command a full pitch mix at 18 years old is nothing short of impressive. He is fantastic at consistently avoiding the middle of the strike zone with all three pitches and throws a ton of strikes. FB/CB combo is a bit above the CH currently in overall control but starting to see consistency from the offspeed. Majority of Perez’s misses are from overthrows missing glove side and low, and appear to be easy corrections as he continues to develop. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: It’s extremely difficult to watch Eury Perez pitch and not be bullish on the potential. Seeing a teenager in full season ball with three swing-and-miss offerings and avoiding hard contact is something you shouldn’t take for granted. Plus you can add in the ease of his operation with limitless projection in the frame, and you see why you can project this type of ceiling. We were very close to labeling him a 55 OFP, which would land him in top 50 territory, but we’ll hold a little longer to see how he handles tougher competition. One of the highest upsides in the Marlins organization.

May 2021 Report

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-8
Weight: 190 lbs

Overall: Perez has the makings of a future rotation piece for the Marlins. The giant (6'8") right-hander has grown four inches since signing in 2019, and the fastball has jumped from the high-80s to sitting 91-95. He's added weight at the same time as this growth spurt, and has gotten significantly stronger. He also doesn't have the typical problems staying in sync and repeating his delivery that taller arms typically do. He has a loose delivery but repeats well, with a high arm slot that allows him to get downhill with ease. He has a four pitch mix, with his fastball and slider ahead of the curveball and change. There is still plenty of room for more potential velo as Perez has ample room to add even more strength to the frame. This is an arm to follow closely, and should shoot up lists with a strong 2021.
