Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 7
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Average height and weight, trim, high waisted, high level of conditioning. Should maintain physique long term. Underwent Tommy John surgery in the spring of 2019.

Mechanics: Full windup; drop and drive; high leg lift, hand break at waist; fast arm, long arm action, delivering from a 3/4 slot. Generates huge extension, with similar exaggerated leg and arm extensor. Fully extends front arm before foot plant. Simple step and throw from stretch, but maintains foundational mechanics of his operation.

Fastball: Was sitting 93-96 mph for Auburn in 2018, with high rising action. Averaged 19.1 inches of induced vertical break in 2018 and 2019, showing efficient qualities. He commands the pitch well elevated and armside, will struggle to work inside to lefties with precision. Pitch bores in on righthanders with rise and slight run. Generates swings and misses due to movement characteristics paired with his deceptive release, and nearly seven feet of extension. Grade: 50

Curveball: It's been called both a slider and curveball, but in 2019 Daniels was throwing more of a traditional curveball. Tight break, with slurvy two plane break. Commands the pitch well to his gloveside, expanding the zone against right handed hitters, and back footing the pitch to lefties. Will lose control from the stretch and will struggle to land his breaking ball. Grade: 50

Changeup: Rarely used pitch in the low 80s, limited feel for the pitch, will struggle to replicate arm speed and pronation is inconsistent. Will show flashes of an average changeup, generating a little under 14 inches of run. Overall it's a true third pitch. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Fringe average strike thrower who seemed to be turning a corner during his Sophomore season. Works better to his armside with his fastball than his gloveside, and vice versa with his slider. Limited feel and command of his changeup. Throws enough strikes to stay competitive but will put himself into jams missing spots and nibbling with his fastball. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: As Daniels returns from TJS in 2021 fully recovered we will get a glimpse of where his tuff stands. If he returns to 2018 form, there's two legitimate average or better pitches with strong movement profiles and the ability to work north to south with ease. His fringe average strike throwing and lack of a third pitch likely pushes Daniels to a pen role long term where his stuff will play up. More likely headed toward low leverage relief or a long role. One of the more underrated players in the Angels system.
