Jan 2021 Report

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 199 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 5
RuleV: Eligible
Physical Description: Average build. On the smaller side of a frame for an MLB starter, but has enough athleticism to profile as one. Athletic, gets off the mound and fields his position well.
Delivery & Mechanics: Utilized over the head full wind up from third base side. Drives well into back leg. Gets good extension with lead leg and shows good toe drag, staying over the rubber long with his drive leg. Uses spinal tilt to generate energy upwards and create a high 3/4 arm slot. Head whack present during deceleration and has a high effort delivery. Naturally above average arm speed.
Fastball: 89-92 t94. Shows good armside run but will flatten out at times. Works east to west very well. Low spin dictates better usage in and off the plate rather than north and south. Works in well to right handers. Average command. Very hittable pitch if left in hitting zone. Not enough active spin or velocity to avoid mistakes over the plate. Grade: 45
Curveball: 81-83 with vertical drop, power movement. Good depth and sharp, late break. Throws it for easy strikes over the plate and down in the zones, getting hitters to chase. Hard for hitters to square up due to late, sharp break and depth. Grade: 55
Changeup: 85-87. Shows promise with fade and armside run. Inconsistent vertical movement. Below average command but can get hitters to chase with deception and good arm speed to sell the pitch. Low usage third offering that should keep left handers honest. Grade: 45
Control and Command: Generally fills up the strike zone or doesn't miss by much. Will miss arm side with the fastball with too much run at times. Struggles to hit his target up and down, but locates better east-west. Fringe-average control despite efforted delivery and headwhack with below average command. Control: 45 | Command: 40
Overall: Brown has more consistently sat 91-94 with his fastball in the past but his stuff and command were off in 2019. He needs the fastball velocity and command of its sinking action to make it playable. His curveball still flashes plus at times and is an effective swing and miss pitch. He has enough movement on his changeup at times to get left handers out with it. The effort in his delivery and headwhack suggest it will be hard to get the consistent command to be a starter long term, but historically has thrown enough strikes anyway. He has the athleticism and enough frame on the low end to start, but his fastball could see a tick up as a reliever and he could rely heavier on the curveball in a multi-inning relief role to be an effective reliever.
