Apr 2021 Report
Evaluator: Ian Smith
Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2014 Round 1
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster
Physical Description: Very slight frame. High waisted with long limbs. Lean throughout, with some room to add strength. Has battled injuries throughout his career, including COVID this past summer.
Hit: Gordon works out of an upright stance with a narrow, slightly open base. Lead heel raised with his hands settling in at his ears. Slight bat wiggle into a linear bat path that's very short to the ball. Bat speed is slightly above average and shows the ability to rotate well. Gordon primarily works pull side with some ability to slap the ball to the opposite field. Above average bat to ball skills, but poor plate discipline and minimal thump curb the ceiling. Grade: 45
Power: Gordon lacks the natural strength and bat path to be conducive to above average power grades. His advanced ability to rotate to the ball allows him to run into a few home runs to the pull side but will likely be a gap/gap hitter throughout his career. Grade: 30
Field: Doesn't show tremendous range moving in either direction, but Gordon bends well to the ball and shows butter soft hands. His footwork and instincts allows him to get into good positions to make up for a lack of lateral range. Glove is always smooth, and will turn double plays with ease. Profiles much better going forward as a 2B over SS. Grade: 45
Arm: Will make throws from multiple arm angles with accuracy. Gathers himself well and allows his body to get underneath himself before throws. Not a ton of strength in the frame, but Gordon's mechanics and arm speed allow him to get good carry on his throws as well. Grade: 50
Run: Gordon, a 6.6 runner in the 60 coming out of high school has become an even better runner in the pros. An explosive first step out of the box allows him to reach top speed quickly and can find a second gear on extra base hits. Above average instincts on the base pads combined with the foot speed allows Gordon to be a consistent threat on the bases. Grade: 55
Overall: Gordon has unfortunately not lived up to the hype of being a 1st round pick back in 2014, but that's not to say he doesn't have value in this Twins system. Gordon has battled every setback over the last two years, but presents a steady glove who can run and has the experience to possibly provide some big league depth in 2021.
