Physical Description: Tall, lanky frame but sturdy; square shoulders with long arms; high waist with long legs. Room to add significant strength throughout; athletic for his size. With strength gains, could be a Cody Bellinger-like frame. Surgery to repair a nasal fracture resulting from an HBP in 2019.
Hit: Stance slightly open; small crouch produces a wide base with hands high above the letters. Fairly balanced with a short step toward the plate to square the body during load; cheats the back foot pivot early to allow hips to clear. Generates leverage and plus bat speed by staying fairly upright and extending long arms; loud contact especially to the pull field. Passive technique; finds himself behind in counts frequently due to the approach causing swing-and-miss, but will also take a fair share of free passes. There is potential for an average hit tool, but approach and contact issues make a below-average outcome more likely. Grade: 40
Power: Impressive raw power will flash in-game; home runs sound like gunshots off the bat. Power favors the pull field heavily but will go to center for extra-base hits as well. Plus raw power and physical projection remaining suggest the power could play plus if there is ample contact, but lagging hit tool brings it to more above-average levels. Grade: 55
Field: Good athlete in the field with instincts, but physical gains may warrant a corner position in the future. Assuming a corner outfield spot, his long strides, athleticism, and glove work should prevent him from being a liability in the field. Grade: 50
Arm: Above average arm; long levers and athleticism help throws show carry; off-line at times, but continued repetitions and pro instruction should help. Plus arm strength should allow it to play above-average suitable for any spot in the grass. Grade: 55
Run: Long, galloping strides in the outfield grass and on the basepaths; not a base-stealing threat, but has enough speed to take an extra-base or leg out an occasional infield hit. Above-average currently but gains may bring it to average. Grade: 50
Overall: Cerda shows an exciting but risky profile--time is still on his side and it is easy for an optimist to envision an average every day MLB future for Cerda patrolling a corner outfield spot. On the other hand, Cerda will be a 21-year old who has yet to hit A-ball entering the 2021 season and has an approach that may cause him to get exposed in the upper levels where pitchers are filling the zone more often. To realize his ceiling, he will need to make some adjustments with the hit tool in order to make contact more frequently. Not only would it help strikeout numbers, but it would also help to leverage his plus raw power. Keeping the risks in mind, the likely outcome is a platoon/up-and-down outfielder.
