Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Trevor Hooth

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 167 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: High waist and thick lower half. He looks heavier than the listed weight and looks to be at physical maturity.

Delivery & Mechanics: Over the top arm slot. Starts on the right side of the rubber, slightly offset towards the first base. Hands start at the stomach and raise up to his head as he reaches the balance point. Chest high leg kick. Slight bend in the knee as he extends out. Lands closed. Finishes with flat back and high leg kick.

Fastball: 90-93. Some ride through the zone. Likes to change the eye level and throw it up in the zone after several changeups down. Works it east to west. On its own it will give up hard contact, but as his second pitch it plays up. Grade: 45

Slider: Low 80's. Moderate gyro movement. Very rarely used. Might be a better pitch if he used it. Grade: 40

Changeup: High 70's. Generates a lot of tumble. Good deception. Uses this as his primary pitch, it gets thrown more than his fastball. He can throw it back to back and still get whiffs. Controls it well east, west, and to the bottom of the zone. If he overuses it hitters start to get a feel for it, but in his short stints that still results in weak contact. Grade: 60

Control and Command: He controls the changeup well, but he has a tendency to spike the pitch. His fastball and slider both are not in the same realm in terms of control. His walk numbers are very high, but they look inflated based on his short outings. It works out because of how much he relies on his changeup. His control is fringe, and will have to improve upon it to carve out a bullpen role at the highest level. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: The Twins are already using Moran in a bullpen role. In those short stints he does well relying heavily on his fastball and changeup. He uses his changeup at his primary pitch and it works. It's the kind of pitch that can be thrown three times in a row and get a whiff every time. It's close to being double plus, but he'll need a better fastball to compliment it. There is also a large injury history with him. He could make a multi-inning middle reliever in the big leagues with improved command.
