Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Russ Peters

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Slender, wiry, strong for size, prototypical teenage shortstop build. Quick twitch athleticism. Just 17 years-old has time to grow bigger and stronger.

Hit: Hands back and just above shoulder level, feet set just wider than shoulder width apart, slightly open stance, fairly quiet and smooth swing, front foot moves minimally, makes consistent contact, produces great barrel whip, advanced hitter who handles lefties well for a youngster, swing can get flat at times, may get exposed at higher level, ceiling as an average hitter. Hit tool presently grades well below-average; solid average potential moving forward. Grade: 50

Power: Current swing not exactly geared for consistent power but the ability is there. Needs to add loft; possesses good bat speed and strength. Appears to change approach and mechanics when trying to go deep; sells out for the long ball, when he gets a hold of one shows off potential for average power; especially to the pull side. Grade: 50

Field: Soft hands, good footwork, gets to a lot of difficult balls. Occasionally lacks a quick first step, makes fluid quick transfers, adjusts body to make throws, good chance to stick at short and be an average defender depending on how he fills out with age; glove would potentially play up at 2B or 3B if moved. Grade: 50

Arm: Average to slightly above average, could play anywhere on the dirt, gets rid of the ball quickly, generally accurate throws but room for improvement, makes adjustments to throws based on fielding location. Grade: 55

Run: Slightly above-average currently, likely just average as he matures. Grade: 50

Overall: Signed for $1.8 million from the Dominican Republic in 2019. Was the youngest player invited to Reds Fall Developmental Camp in Goodyear, Arizona. He is far away from the big leagues and the gap between what is and what could be is vast. Reds are hoping they found their shortstop of the future with potential average or better tools across the board. Stateside debut in 2021will shed more light on Minier's future. Will likely start in the Arizona League as an 18-year-old.
