Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 19 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Average height with a lean build. High-waisted. Has room to fill out and add upper body strength. Athletic.

Hit: Stands mostly upright in the box. Keeps his hands high and back. Some pre-pitch bat movement. Uses a moderate leg kick as his timing mechanism. Keeps his weight on his back foot. Linear swing that produces line-drive contact. Above-average or better bat speed. Has a one-handed follow through. Shows good bat-to-ball skills and gets the ball in the air when he makes good contact. Has a patient approach and should be able to avoid high strikeout totals. Grade: 50

Power: Shows average raw power during BP with room to grow as he physically matures. Has a rotational swing and has already gotten the ball in the air with regularity. His swing creates natural lift off the bat, which when paired with his bat speed and physical projection, indicates he has some untapped power potential. Grade: 50

Field: Moves well in the field. An instinctual player who takes good routes and has above-average footspeed; above-average range in CF. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm strength with average carry. Mostly accurate in limited looks. Throws from a high 3/4 arm slot. Tool has some room to grow as he adds upper-body strength. Fits in CF and LF. Grade: 50

Run: Recorded above-average to plus times in the 60 as an amateur. Proved to be a stolen base threat in his minor league debut. No recent looks. Grade: 50

Overall: All of Matos' tools project as average or better, and he's one of the more exciting prospects in the Giants' system because of it. He knocked the cover off the ball in the DSL in 2019 and received positive reports from instructs in 2020. At this point, Matos is mostly projection beyond his bat-to-ball skills, but the ingredients are present for him to be a future regular or perhaps something more.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Martin

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 188 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Round 1
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: 6-foot, 188-pound frame. Average height, pretty solid build, lots of muscle throughout. Combination of muscle and above-average athleticism. Probably done developing physically.

Hit: Slightly open stance, pretty wide base with moderate bend in knees. Hands start near back shoulder with barrel tilt swaying from over his shoulder to pointing in the air. Body is on-line from head to feet, slight lean over the plate once he strides due to slightly open stance. Small stride towards pitcher. Pretty upward swing path due to front leg lockout. Present bat speed with thump in the bat. Uses back leg really well, driving down through contact. Could make additional contact if he moved forward through contact and did not lock out his front leg, more barrel time in the zone. Average if not slightly below average bat-to-ball skills. More pull heavy than anything else but still hits to all fields. Generally ground balls are all pull side, line drives are more pull side but some spray, and fly balls are a consistent spray. Below average strikeout rate and average walk rate. Sells out for power. Grade: 40

Power: Hits the ball really hard. Average or slightly below average bat-to-ball skills because he sells out for power. Bat path takes an upward swing plane creating loft. Generally has more home run power to the pull side but he is still able to hit home runs the opposite way. Would probably profile as a 20-25 home run guy in the Major Leagues. Might be better suited to aim for 10-15 home runs and make additional contact. Hits the ball extremely hard and runs decently, could rack up a ton of extra base hits. Grade: 55

Field: Currently a center fielder in the Minor Leagues but profiles better as a corner outfielder moving forward. Above-average athleticism and average speed make him an average defender and a passable center fielder. Average routes and jumps to balls as well as lateral movement. Grade: 50

Arm: Really strong arm from the outfield. Throws carry well and are fairly accurate. If he is destined for a corner spot, right field seems likely thanks to his arm strength. Could be a plus right fielder. Grade: 60

Run: Above-average runner as it currently stands. He is only 21 years old and is built well so it will most likely regress to an average point when he reaches the Major Leagues. Hustles out of the box on ground balls. Not a burner but doesn't dog it either. Grade: 50

Overall: Heliot Ramos has been a highly touted prospect ever since his selection in the first round of the 2017 draft. A lot to like from a tools perspective. Hits the ball extremely hard and has projectable power. His defensive and speed tools are good enough to pass in the Major Leagues but unspectacular. The main concern is his hit tool. His strikeout rate has always been below average and it got even worse once he reached Double-A in 2019. In fact, he struggled upon reaching Double-A but he still had an overall above-average offensive profile. If he cannot cut down on strikeouts, he will be a three-true outcome player who does not hit for substantial power and only an average walk rate with average defense. However, if he can cut down on strikeouts, he could be an all-star caliber player. The gap between the floor and ceiling all rest in his hit tool.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 238 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 1
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Sturdy, physical build; powerful upper body; broad shoulders, muscular arms, solid torso, wide hips, thick and strong thighs and legs. Built more like a first baseman than a catcher. Lumbering athlete with more finesse than twitch. No projection remaining. Build reminiscent of Todd Helton. Injury history includes a hand and thumb fracture.

Hit: Upright, open stance; slight bend to form a wide base. Quiet hands sit just under the ear. Stance closes at load; no stride. Plus bat speed from quick hands, strong arms, and leg engagement. Stiff top half exposes the bottom of the zone and spin. Aggressive approach within the zone; willing to expand when behind. A below-average tool padded by the ability to drive the ball Grade: 45

Power: Plus raw that shows above-average in-game. Upright stance and high finish yield natural loft with the stroke. Sprays extra-base hits all over, shows home run pop to right-center. Tool has reached projection. Grade: 55

Field: Confident, plus defender behind the plate; compact and flexible behind the plate considering size. Good mobility, average framer, quick and clean transfers. Trusts glove to pick balls in dirt too much at times; reliable and steady nevertheless. May need a position change later in career due to size. Grade: 60

Arm: Above-average arm; average strength but quick feet, clean transfers, and accuracy pad the overall grade. Pop times range in the 2.05-2.10 area. Throws lack significant carry; tend to sink to the bag on attempted steals, but throws are consistent to the bag. Grade: 55

Run: Average currently and figures to lose a step long-term; 4.3 home to first; above-average runner for a catcher currently. Not going to clog bases, but far from an asset. Not a base-stealing threat or likely to do little things to improve the tool in spite of shortcomings with speed. Grade: 40

Overall: Bart's offense, particularly his power, is what propelled him on draft boards in 2018, but his deft defense is what lowers his risk as a prospect and affords him a soft back-up floor. The concerns with the hit tool are real, but his work ethic and ability to hit for power should make even a .245-.255 average play up at the highest levels despite his free-swinging approach. There is little projection remaining, but even if he has reached his potential already, an everyday future remains more likely than not long-term.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Tyler Henninger

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 178 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Lean, wiry frame. Surprising strength. Long limbs with room for development. High waisted. Fair lower body muscular development. Has room to add weight and strength with continued development.

Hit: Open stance, hands at the head. Upright body with feet shoulder width apart. Plus bat speed on an upper cut path. Produces natural loft. Flyball approach, continues to improve launch angle. Mostly uses pull-side approach, could learn how to use the whole field better. Makes hard contact frequently. Patient hitter, shows ability to take a walk. Struggles slightly against advances pitching currently, especially with advanced spin. Needs to continue to improve plan at the plate. Bat speed and ability to make hard contact should allow him to hit at an above-average clip. Grade: 55

Power: Double-plus raw power, game power plays more plus. Produces a lot of loud contact due to strength and bat speed. Good lift for power, ball jumps off bat. Can hit them high and far. Possesses home run and gap power potential. Potential to add even more power with additional strength Grade: 60

Field: Solid defender with good actions. Solid hands, will get caught between hops occasionally. Shows instincts to make plays, high IQ. Flashes some quick twitch ability, but lacks speed to have advanced range. Below-average DP turn. Possibility to stay at SS with development, profiles better at 3B. Grade: 50

Arm: Strong arm with long release. On-line carry through the bag, most times on target. Struggles to throw on the run. Must stay on top, gets wild with lower arm angle. Below-average transfer, can get slow at times. Needs to improve ability to throw from multiple angles. Would be playable at 3B. Grade: 55

Run: Below-average runner. Gets out of the box decently, lacks burst and acceleration. Long strides. Can occasionally steal a base, gets caught too often though. Shows good instincts, can take an extra base. Speed impacts range up the middle, still playable. Grade: 40

Overall: Luciano's bat stands out, especially for someone his age. He shows plus bat speed with above-average bat to ball skills that lead to a lot of hard hit balls. His approach has continued to get better and it could improve even more. He shows the ability to walk, but is still susceptible to advanced spin. He might wind up a plus hitter, but can be confidently projected at least as an above-average hitter. He combines it with double-plus raw power that can launch balls high and far. His swing has natural loft that combines well with his strength and bat speed leading to a plus power profile. He is a below-average runner who shows good instincts but is not a threat to steal. Defensively, he shows good action with the potential to play SS if he has time to develop. He lacks the speed for a lot of range and struggles to throw on the run or from multiple angles. When under control, his arm plays as a plus tool with on-line carry and good accuracy. He could develop into an average defender at short, but due to the plus arm and lack of lateral speed he could also fit well over at 3B. His bat profiles for the position. Overall, Luciano looks like an above-average regular who can hit for average and power.
