Physical Description: Well filled out kid with good muscle. Athletic frame, good height built like a receiver.
Hit: Pre-pitch he has a slight bend at his knee and has a hunch to his back. Lutz has a small toe tap that he uses to start his swing. When he swings he takes a quick stride towards the mound and looks to hammer baseballs. He is looking to hit balls in the air where he hopes to hit the long ball thanks to the noticeable upper-cut in his swing path. Lutz is very aggressive at the plate looking to take hacks early and often, which when he makes contact is helpful but he is often late resulting in swings and misses or weak contact. He does have a problem against right-handed pitchers as he tends to struggle seeing spin out of the hand, making me wonder if he is a potential platoon bat going forward. He is much better against lefties and really benefits from that extra time that a right-handed hitter gets against left-handed pitchers. Grade: 45
Power: Lutz has plus power, he can take the ball out of any ballpark he plays in. He has above-average bat-speed to go along with tremendous raw strength and the loft he generates. He hits the ball hard and has posted exit velocities as high as 114mph in his professional career, but something to take note of is his exit velocities have been slightly dipping over the years. Most of his power goes towards the pull-side but he does have the power to go to the deepest part of any ballpark and hit it out. Grade: 60
Field: Tristen Lutz has split his time in the minors between center field and right field but he profiles best in a corner. He struggles in center because of his lack of lateral agility and he takes sub-optimal routes to the ball, when he is in centerfield. In a corner his lack of lateral agility and poor routes to the ball will be covered up. Grade: 45
Arm: Tristen Lutz arm is strong with good carry and he is accurate with his throws. His arm profiles anywhere in the outfield but profiles best in right-field. Grade: 60
Run: Lutz is an average runner under-way with an average length stride. He isn't going to be a stolen base threat because of his below-average jumps. He isn't an explosive athlete which causes his first step to be below-average hurting his overall run grade. As he has filled out his foot-speed has declined. Grade: 45
Overall: Lutz has everything you want out of a corner outfielder. He has plus power and a plus arm. I do have concerns about his ability to hit right-handed pitchers which may push him towards being a platoon bat. He struggles to pick up pitches against right-handed pitchers and if he can improve upon that there is a chance he could be a low end regular.
