Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2017 Round 3
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Listed at 6'1, 180. Average build. Thin but toned upper half. Already 25, probably no more room for physical projection.

Hit: Very open, upright stance; had pretty active hands pre-swing in minors but seemed to quiet his setup in very limited MLB time last season. Toe tap with short stride. Conservative approach; doesn't really engage lower half in swing. Average bat control. Gets bat to ball in all areas of the strike zone but doesn't drive pitches on the outer half with authority. Above-average pitch recognition; patient approach. Grade: 50

Power: Fringy raw power; not especially strong or physical. Has some hand speed and whip in the swing that allows him to turn on pitches down and in and drive the ball pull-side. Flat bat path; ran pretty high ground ball rates throughout minor-league career. Grade: 40

Field: Athleticism and reads work in the outfield. Capable of playing an average center field; should be above-average in a corner. Has experience at all three outfield positions. Grade: 55

Arm: Above-average arm is functional anywhere in the outfield Grade: 55

Run: Clocks home to first times in the 4.2-4.3 second range. That's slightly better than average; similar times logged this past season by Max Kepler and Jake Cronenworth, per Statcast Grade: 55

Overall: Gonzalez made his MLB debut in 2020 and looks like a near-term role player. He's patient and makes a high volume of contact, so he should run solid strikeout and walk rates. There's not much raw power here, though, and Gonzalez's hands-dominant swing is only conducive to driving pitches on the inner half. He can get the bat head out and reach pitches away but doesn't impact the ball when forced to get his arms extended. He's a perfectly fine bench outfielder because of the approach and defensive profile but doesn't hit for enough power to be a true everyday option.
