Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Tall, lanky build; thin frame with tapered shoulders; slim but well-defined arms with a trim waist; long, runner's legs. Room to add muscle throughout but not likely to make significant gains; near physical projection. Frame reminds me of former MLB shortstop Alexei Ramirez.

Hit: Open stance with a wide base; stands on top of the plate with an inverted front foot; thighs are shoulder width apart; legs go much further apart starting at the knees. Hands sit near the back shoulder just above the letters; slightly coiled upper body. Does not generate a ton of leverage despite a tall frame; bat speed is average but the stroke is quick to the zone. High leg kick early in counts but will shorten to small stride or toe-tap when behind. The approach is contact-oriented; short, compact swing through the ball. Wants to hit; will not force swings, but not passive on pitches in the zone either; pulls hands in nicely for pitches on the inner third; sees lefties especially well. Shows ability to lay off good spin away but will occasionally get frozen on breaking pitches in the zone. Overall, an average hit tool with limited projection remaining unless he overhauls approach. Grade: 50

Power: Swing is contact over loft; extra-base hits are mostly line drives down the lines and in the gaps. Home-runs come mostly on pitches on the outer third that allow him to extend his hands. Flashes average raw and the frame figures to help home run totals enter double digits as it fills out, but power is below average currently. Grade: 40

Field: Smooth fielder; above average athlete with capable range; comfortable with charging choppers and bare handing slow rollers. Does not move his feet enough to square up ground balls at times and will boot a ball occasionally; could be fixed with continued pro instruction. Moved around the field in the minors but profiles best at shortstop. Grade: 55

Arm: Plus arm strength; quick transfers from the glove allow a fast release but still gets something on his throws with minimal effort. Accuracy is less than ideal at times, but should have no issue making any throw necessary of a shortstop. Strong arm. Grade: 60

Run: Gliding acceleration on the bases with long strides; shows instincts on the bases, but not a base-stealing threat. Home to first times show above average times in the minors but will likely play average long-term. Grade: 50

Overall: Formerly known as Jose Garcia, Barrero was brought up to the major leagues at 22-years-old without any career games above High-A, speaking to the organization's belief and trust in his abilities. The frame is impressive for an infielder; couple that with his athleticism and he has the ingredients of an exciting young player. Despite the lack of a carrying tool, the sum of the parts for Barrero help mitigate his risk as a prospect and will help to keep him in the lineup on a daily basis.
