Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 208 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 4
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Tall, broad-shouldered, and near physical max. Strong lower-half, moderate athleticism, with some maintenance required long term.

Delivery & Mechanics: Throws from the stretch; short arm action, over the top a lot, plus arm speed. High leg lift, repeats well, strong leg block will lose his release point as the game wears on. Generates velocity from strong lower half and fast arm.

Fastball: Sits 93-95 mph, up to 98 mph in the spring of 2020. High ride fastball that plays best high armside. He shows the ability to command that area best and it generates his best results. Tough to barrel up and will throw it to all four quadrants. Good command of the pitch with the velocity to play in the pen. Grade: 55

Curveball: Second pitch versus lefthanded hitters, used in lieu of slider. More 12-6 break, but slurvy shape, looks more like a variation of his slider with less velocity offering at 80-84 mph. Not as good as his slider long term but it serves its purpose and gets results. Grade: 45

Slider: Hard tight slider, 86-88 mph, clocked as high as 89. Late downward break, he throws it hard, and can manipulate break to add more late drop. Best swing and miss pitch, plus velocity, tunnels well off of his fastball. Grade: 55

Changeup: Low-80s changeup that can become a solid third offering. Sits 82-83 with solid fade and tumble, lacks consistent shape. Gets barreled high in the zone. Needs to command pitch better for better results. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Below average control and command. Tough to barrel up in part because he misses the zone with frequency. Struggles to hold his release point and the strike zone as starts wear on. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: A loud arm with big velocity and good pitch shape. The type of stuff that can miss a lot of bats out of the pen. Was used mostly as a reliever at Arizona State in 2020 and that's likely where his future lies. He's built like a reliever, throws like a reliever, and has reliever stuff. He might develop into a reliable backend bullpen arm with a nice one-two punch with his fastball and curveball. Lacks command of the zone and likely can't be used in anything more than an inning or two.
