Jan 2021 Report
Evaluator: Joe Drake
Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 183 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 11
RuleV: 2021
Physical Description: Listed at 6'2", 183, but doesn't quite look it. Unassuming frame. Lean and athletic with a little thickness to the lower half, but nothing that stands out. Some room for weight up top. Average shoulders. Generic young pitcher's frame.
Delivery & Mechanics: Windup starts angled at right-handed batter's box. Pointed leg lift to the letters, arm drops behind the body and fires from 3/4s slot. Finishes fairly tall. Mostly low effort delivery. Doesn't get good separation at foot plant. Arm might be a touch early. Gets into his glutes. LIkes to alter timing when bases are empty to mess with batter. Works predominantly from the 1B side of the rubber. Stretch features a quicker leg lift and sometimes a slide step and starts closed with the lead foot a full foot length close to 3B. Very cognizant of runners, varies timing.
Fastball: 89-94, Avg 92, T96. Has solid run. Relies on it heavily. Reported to spin the ball well and you can see it in the amount of whiffs and pop-ups he gets, suggesting he converts it to vertical break efficiently. Uses it all over the zone, but tends to work up with two strikes and will occasionally backdoor it to righties. Gets hit around when he leaves it over the plate. Used as an out pitch, but struggles to put people away with it consistently. Grade: 50
Curveball: 76-81, Avg 79. Steep 1-7 shape. Mirrors the fastball well. Uses same slot, maintains arm speed, and the best ones have hard, vertical bite. Above-average depth. Drops it in the zone to freeze hitters for called strikes and buries it for whiffs. Not squared up often. Limited use, around 20% in my looks. Regularly flashes plus with a few loopers mixed in, sitting above-average most often. Might benefit from additional usage. Grade: 55
Control and Command: Control is fringy when it's on and poor when it's off; On more often than it's off. Rarely leaves anything over the heart, but will waste a few. Works ahead often. Does a good job of working the shadows with the fastball and putting the curve in the general area it needs to be in. Not necessarily dotting pitches consistently. Control: 45 | Command: 40
Overall: Burrows is a two-pitch righty with solid stuff and decent command. It's a relief-only profile given that the stuff isn't overwhelming and I didn't see a third pitch over three starts. His average velocity should tick up in the pen and may help put hitters away more efficiently. Ceiling is average high-leverage if everything clicks out of the pen, but a low-leverage middle relief role is more likely.
