Evaluator: Russ Peters
Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 206 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA, SD
RuleV: On 40-man
Physical Description: Tall, slender, athletic build. Room to add a bit of bulk on upper body. Strong lower half.
Delivery & Mechanics: 3/4 arm slot. Very deliberate high front leg lift, quick arm action and whip. Sometimes delivery is a little rushed. Ball appears to come out very easily, rather clean. Smooth, low effort delivery.
Fastball: Sits 97-100 mph, tops out at 102 mph. One of the better fastballs in the game. Spin rate in the 99th percentile. Explodes from his hand. Elite velocity accompanied with cut and ride on a downhill plane. Very difficult for hitters to barrel. Elicits swing and miss and a lot of weak contact. Grade: 80
Slider: 88-92 with depth. 2 plane movement. Occasionally flattens out or becomes more slurvy. Plays up due to batters sitting on the fastball. Grade: 50
Control and Command: Control has been a point of struggle for Clase in the past. Has successfully worked to cut down on walks. Has the tendency to throw more strikes but the truth is that the fastball has so much movement that he can have trouble knowing exactly where it is going. Command is definitely a point for improvement. Control: 50 | Command: 40
Overall: two pitch pitcher with one of those pitching being elite, as proven by his 2019 debut Clase is big league ready (2020 was spent serving a PED suspension), had just a 3% barrel rate over 23 MLB innings, the stuff is plain nasty but whether his command will develop enough to be an elite closer is yet to be seen, until he proves himself he will likely continue being used in both high and medium leverage relief situations.
