Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Trevor Hooth

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 4 (ATL)
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Long, lanky frame. Lean build. Looks an easy 20 pounds heavier than his listed weight, still with some more room to add to the frame.

Fastball: 90-94 T96. Generates some armside run low in the zone. It can play up in the zone, but he has a tendency to sail it and throw it too high to be competitive. He can also fall into trouble when he tries too hard to nibble the corners too much. Generally the upper echelon of his velo is his four-seamer, the movement is the two seem variant of the pitch. Grade: 50

Curveball: 79-81. Sharp 1-7 shape. This pitch generates a lot of vertical movement. It can generate whiffs when it bottoms out of the zone. He can also locate it well to the gloveside corner. Much like his fastball he has a tendency to leave it up in the zone. It does a good job maintaining its shape up in the zone, but it also is hittable. It shows flashes of being plus, and with more consistent whiffs it could get there. Grade: 55

Changeup: 85-87. Armside fade low in the zone. It's a change of pace more than anything. There isn't enough velo separation to make it a true weapon. It can get some whiffs because of sequencing, especially at the bottom of the velo range. Grade: 40

Control and Command: All of his pitches have a tendency to climb the ladder too much, especially his fastball. All three of his pitches tend to miss the corners, but not egregiously. For the most part he is around the zone, unless his fastball sails or he spikes the curveball. He doesn't concede when behind in the count, he'll continue to nibble for weak contact which results in potentially misleading walk numbers. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Beck can be a starter with a little more development on his changeup. When he is controlling his arsenal, the hitters are in for a tough day. His breaking ball could be a legitimate plus pitch, and it's very close as is. The Giants saw something in him to acquire him as a part of the Mark Melancon trade. There’s a rotation future, but also could fallback into a bullpen role with his fastball/curveball combination.
