Physical Description: Short and lanky build lacking standout physical tools. Slim arms and long, bony legs. Plenty of room for added growth and muscle to his frame. Beginning to add more size as he physically matures.
Hit: Switch hitter with a crouched stance at the plate. Elbows stick wildly out with bent knees low to the zone. Chokes up on the bat; hands stay just slightly above the letters with a subtle toe tap preload. Little movement in his lower half through swing. Relies on his upper body mechanics for contact. Average bat speed produces inconsistent contact. Patient approach; struggles with pitch recognition. Needs more plate appearances at all levels. Room for improvement as he grows and matures. Grade: 40
Power: Lacks the physicality to drive the ball consistently. Slaps the ball the opposite way, lacks much over-the-fence power. Room for physical projection with added raw strength and power as he grows into his body. Grade: 30
Field: Plus fielder with good movements on the dirt. Projectible shortstop with smooth hands and twitchy athleticism. Plays the ball well on a hop. Turns double plays with ease. Looks comfortable defensively with quick movements and great instincts. Grade: 60
Arm: Above-average arm accuracy and solid arm strength from shortstop. Throws have good accuracy and carry. Quick arm actions and good zip. Grade: 55
Run: Average speed on the basepaths at this point in his development. Good hustle and quickness, lacks burst and eye-popping speed. Aggressive base stealer; lacks the burst and athleticism to nab bags consistently. Grade: 50
Overall: Guzman has the defensive tools to stick at shortstop long term, but he needs to hit and tap into more power as he physically matures. He's shown strides in both areas, but lacks the results to this point. Guzman is worth keeping an eye on as he develops in the Royals' system.
