Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Mike Kurland

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Lean stature with room for growth. High waist; long arms. Appears to be in good shape.

Delivery & Mechanics: Pitches from the stretch. Glove begins at waist level, never coming higher prior to entering his stride towards home. Quick movement to home; works at a medium pace. Knee comes up to about the waist. Sits into glutes and creates good hip/shoulder separation. Throws sidearm.

Fastball: 93-98 MPH and able to hit triple digits at times. His delivery adds deception to the fastball and it does show cut and occasional sink. It does have life to it and is great at causing whiffs. He relies on it heavily and although he can miss his spots, the velocity and movement help cover up the mistakes. Grade: 60

Slider: Complimenting well to the fastball, Doval offers a hard, sweeping slider. It breaks hard and often hits the glove side of the plate or gets chases but can hang at times. Again, having similar arm action on the fastball as he does with the fastball can assist in covering up the location mistakes. The similar arm action paired with the angle at which he delivers the pitch makes for it to be difficult to hit and adds to the deception. Grade: 50

Control and Command: When Doval hits his spots, he is essentially untouchable. Unfortunately, that can be far a few in between. He is often missing the zone but the stuff is absolutely electric and even when he misses his spots in the zone, he is able to miss bats. But he does struggle to consistently spot the ball where it is supposed to go. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: When Doval is on, he is tough to hit and can be great. However, he is prone to walks and due to the ongoing issues with free passes, it will limit his potential. He has the two solid to plus pitches and there is serious strikeout upside but he cannot seem to put the stuff together with control and command and until we see it all come together, he will have issues in high leverage situations as he moves up the ladder of pro ball.
