Physical Description: Well-built frame throughout. Good size with broad shoulders and defined chest. Strong lower half with trunk-like legs and thighs.
Hit: Slightly crouched right-handed stance. Hands remain above the letters, elbows point out. Upper and lower half stay compact and tight. Hit tool leaves more to be desired. Struggles to make contact to all fields. Doesn't produce consistent hard contact. Aggressive, swing-heavy approach leads to several strikeouts. Not viewed as an on-base threat. Needs to improve his plate discipline drastically. Grade: 40
Power: Shows glimpses of above-average power when he connects. Turns on pitches to deep center and left field. When swing comes together, pure raw power display is impressive. Aggressive approach makes him sell out for power at times. Grade: 55
Field: Fringe-average fielder from the catcher position. Struggles with receiving and blocking. Lacks athleticism to glove pitches in the dirt. Needs more consistency and improvement. Grade: 45

Run: Well below-average athleticism across the board. Very slow out of the box with short, choppy strides. Lacks top-end burst to stretch for extra bases. Speed and athleticism hinder his defensive skills. Grade: 30
Overall: Zavala comes up short in several key areas, as his hit tool and athleticism hold back his potential. He likely won't be a starting backstop given his plate discipline struggles, but his power and improved arm strength can be viewed as an occasional fill-in at the position.
