Acquired: 2015 Round 5
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster
Physical Description: Long and lean frame with long arms. Lean, but not quite skinny. Wide shoulders and upper back; prominent butt. Some muscle on the frame, but room to fill out a bit more. Moves well, but not necessarily twitchy. Able to field his position well. Mopey demeanor on the mound when things aren't going his way; easily frustrated.
Delivery & Mechanics: Full windup; exaggerated pause at rock step before big leg kick that coils the torso and shifts hips upward. Drops and drives well, staying in the glutes as he comes down the mound. Long arm action, drops down behind the butt before coming through at a high 3/4 slot; hides the ball well. Average separation; arm on time. Whole operation has very deliberate feel; nothing explosive. Moderate effort with low finish. Pace quickens a touch from the stretch; leg kick stays high but moves quicker. Very concerned with runners at first, throws over frequently using different moves.
Fastball: 88-91, t93; Solid ride, tough for hitters to square up. Gets whiffs often up in the zone and can spot up on the corners occasionally for called strikes. Can use it as an out pitch to finish at-bats, especially if set up by a curveball. Deception helps it play up. Grade: 50
Curveball: 75-78; Nearly identical to the slider. Slightly more vertical shape, 1-7. Mirrors the fastball better than the slider. Average break, some tighter than others, flashes plus. Best ones are quick, sharp hammers that make hitters corkscrew, just can't repeat that quality often enough. Grade: 50
Slider: 80-82; Sweeping slider with solid sweep with a little depth. Average bite that flashes plus occasionally. Not used often, clear 4th pitch. Grade: 40
Changeup: 83-85; Solid fade and tumble. Good arm speed sells the pitch well. Could use more separation. Feel needs refinement, struggles with location. Floats occasionally. Grade: 45
Control and Command: Around the zone often but frequently misses spots. Spikes everything a bit too often, but also liable to leave offspeed pitches up, too. Typically works ahead and doesn't walk many. When he's dialed in, he fills up the zone and works efficiently, often on the edges. Has it more often than he doesn't. Control: 45 | Command: 40
Overall: Big lefty with a 4-pitch arsenal and decent command. Fastball and curve headline the offerings but the slider and changeup are usable, too. More of a sum of the parts type profile with neither the stuff nor command standing out. Stuff probably isn't good enough to stick as a backend arm, but likely a big league arm in long relief or low-leverage.
