Physical Description: Slender athletic frame. Proportionally long limbs with a high waist and good strength in the lower half. Tapered torso suggests there's still some room to add muscle in the upper body without sacrificing functional mobility.
Delivery & Mechanics: Traditional windup. Brings arms overhead to activate core into a medium leg-kick and hip hinge. Relatively low effort delivery though good posture and strong rotation still generate solid arm speed. Somewhat inconsistent timing and direction with the front shoulder opening but generally does a fine job with repeatability. Slightly below average time to the plate from the stretch can be exploited by savvy runners.
Fastball: Sits 90-94 and tops 96. Will sink it and cut it depending on the situation. 4-seam has little life but does still tunnel decently with other offerings. Sinker shows good depth and arm-side run. Favors throwing to the glove side and does well getting it there but a lack of high velo and not much hop makes command essential. Not a big strikeout offering but should be good enough at producing weak contact. Grade: 50
Slider: 78-82 MPH sweeper with very high spin efficiency. Good axis keeps a true slider plane and results in massive glove-side break. Can add and subtract depth to give slightly different looks. Some mechanical inconsistency does result in pulling way into the LHH box at times but tons of break usually balances out the problems; will generate some ugly swings even on poorly located pitches. Grade: 55
Changeup: 85-88 with plus movement. Consistent arm speed and strong pronation help generate heavy sink and arm-side run. Shape mirrors slider very well. Has good feel and will regularly spot the change down and arm-side. Very good offering for collecting both whiffs and weak contact. Prefers to throw it to LHHs though movement does well tunneling with the sinker against RHHs. Grade: 60
Control and Command: Has above average feel staying around the zone with all three pitches. Heavy movement on secondary offerings makes them difficult to command but he does well enough. Likes to work off the edges so his misses tend to look worse than they actually are. Ability to manipulate spin and movement profiles shows confidence in the stuff. Control: 55 | Command: 45
Overall: After breaking out in the lower minors, Medina hasn't quite been able to take that next step forward when facing more advanced competition. Regardless, he's still shown a solid mix and good durability. His stuff could play up in the pen but he will likely have an opportunity to start a few games in 2021. If he wants to stick in the rotation, improving his fastball should be a point of emphasis.
