Welcome to the Prospects Live Weekly College Baseball Roundup! Each week, we’ll bring you highlights and stories from the college baseball series happening over the weekend, MLB Draft prospect performances to note, and a recap of our analysts' incredible work nationwide!
Highlights From the Week/Weekend
Clemson takes the series from Florida State: The Tigers continue to roll after winning a vast ACC series against Duke the weekend before. Clemson capped off a 5-0 week by sweeping undefeated Florida State. Not only did they sweep them, but they ten run-ruled them on Frida night, putting up six earned runs against Friday night ace Cam Leiter. The bats were atrociously loud all series as the Tigers scored 38 runs over three games. Jamie Arnold pitched well in game 2 for Florida State, going seven innings pitched and only giving up an earned run. Still, Clemson took it to the Seminoles bullpen and ended up winning 9-8 thanks to a two-out run-scoring single in the ninth from Jacob Hinderleider. Clemson finished the job on Sunday, overcoming an 11-2 deficit with a five-run sixth and six-run seventh, which was capped by Balke Wright’s go-ahead grand slam (more on him in the draft prospect update below). A huge statement series win for the Tigers as they try to solidify themselves as the best team in the ACC.
NC State upsets Duke: Well, the Wolfpack didn’t take getting bumped from the Top 25 lightly! They returned strong with a huge series win against the top-ranked Blue Devils. NC State took the first two games from Duke, part in thanks to an incredible performance from Friday night starter Sam Highfill who went seven innings while givine up three earned and striking out eight. Highfill squared off against Jonathan Santucci but wound up outlasting him. The Wolfpack grabbed the lead thanks to a seventh innings RBI single by catcher Jacob Cozart. Saturday’s game had even more heroics as Eli Serrano III hit a two-run, walk-off homer that ended a six-run rally in the bottom of the ninth allowing NC State to win 9-8. They didn’t quite complete the sweep on as they got ten run ruled, but overall a great weekend that got them back into the Top 25 ranks.
Vanderbilt swept by South Carolina: A marquee SEC matchup between South Carolina and #3 ranked Vanderbilt ended in a shock as South Carolina took all three games against the Commodores. South Carolina’s bats were on fire as they scored 26 runs in those three games. The Gamecocks started off strong sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday with 8-4 and 8-3 wins for their SEC home opener. Friday night ace Carter Holton was phenomenal in game 1 for Vanderbilt, but Eli Jones held right with him. In game two, Gamecocks clean up hitter Ethan Petry hit two home runs and drove in three to help secure the Gamecocks series sweep in day one. Sunday was more of the same as starter Tyler Pitzer went 6.1 innings while giving up just three hits and striking out nine. Gavin Casas and Dylan Brewer powered the Gamecocks to victory by both hitting their third home run and driving in two.
MLB Draft Prospect Updates
Charlie Condon cannot be stopped: Just to note how real Condon’s power is, he hit his 15th home run over the weekend, and it went 441 feet at an exit velo of 114 mph. Condon has some of the best bat speed in this draft class, and he hits dang near everything hard. On top of a polished hit tool, that makes him hard not to consider at 1.1. Question marks revolved around the defense, but he’s been making third base look easy to play. If it wasn’t for Travis Bazzana being an absolute monster, Condon might take 1.1 with ease. It’ll be fun to watch these two guys continue to go at it the rest of the year.
Well, hello there Blake Wright: There might not be a hotter hitter in college baseball than Blake Wright right now. The Clemson senior is seeing the ball well and making a ton of noise. Over the weekend, Wright went 6-for-14 with three home runs and 12 RBI. He’s now got 13 home runs on the year with 40 RBI. Wright is making the case as an intriguing MLB Draft prospect this year. It’s hard to ignore the production he’s put together, especially in ACC play. Keep your eye on Wright for the rest of the season.
Luke Holman is a BAD dude: Luke Holman started as LSU’s Saturday night guy but quickly got bumped up to Friday night, and it’s easy to see why. This weekend, he went six innings while striking out 13 and only gave up one hit and one earned run. After his start over the weekend, he’s down to a 0.78 ERA for the year with 56 strikeouts over 34.2 innings pitched. He’s continued his hot streak into SEC play which should only help his draft stock. There were some questions on whether he’d be a day 1 guy, but he’s definitely push his way up to that potential.
Payton Tolle might be back: Over his last two starts, Tolle has struck out 25 batters over 14 innings pitched. This weekend, he struck out 15 over five innings while allowing no hits. The TCU two-way star has been struggling at the plate, but he has seemed to find it on the mound again. His ERA is still at 5.24 thanks to his early season struggles, but he has taken giant steps forward over his last three starts and against Big12 opponents. You want to see this from Tolle, and the hope is he can continue this the rest of the way.
