Around this time of the year we typically have the All-Star Game festivities and as part of the festivities there is the high school home run derby contest nestled between the traditional Home Run Derby.
Because it happens during a break, what some of the fans at home didn’t get a chance to see was how impressive newly minted Red Sox Blaze Jordan was. Jordan was an underclassmen that won the Home Run Derby thanks to his outstanding bat speed which earned him tons of attention on social media where he was likened to a Bryce Harper type power hitter as a young teenager. All the hype and attention that surrounded Blaze was enough to convince him to forgo his senior year of high school and reclassify from the 2021 draft class into the 2020 draft class as an underclassmen.
Heading into the Under Armour All-American Event all eyes were on Blaze Jordan and he impressed with a couple of hits in the UA All-American game. There are still questions as to where his defensive home is as he doesn’t possess a very strong arm and is a below average runner. More than likely he will probably end up at either first base or designated hitter.
He does however have excellent makeup and an absolute passion for the game and a desire to keep getting better in all facets of his game. He is a very impressive young hitter with tons of power with a very good feel for hitting. Here’s a brief interview I had with Blaze Jordan last year after his performance on Scout Day at the Under Armour Event.
James Weisser: What got you interested in the game of baseball?
Blaze Jordan: My brother, I used to watch and play baseball and football with him when I was younger.
Who was your favorite player to watch growing up?
Growing up I loved watching Miguel Cabrera. I’ve always really loved his game and his swing. I kinda try to copy my game after him a bit. I loved watching him play back in 2012-13 when he won back to back MVPs and hit for the triple crown. I think we have similar swings.
What’s your favorite thing about the game of baseball?
I love going out there and having fun meeting new people and winning with my teammates.
What was the Home Run Derby like for you, how was that experience?
It was a great experience, a little nerve wracking at first hitting in front of such as huge crowd. After I stepped into the box and my nerves settled it was back to hitting regular . A.J. Vukovich put up a good round and made it tough for me but I was able to pull it off.
What’s a few things you’re working on improving?
I’m working on improving my defense as well as trying to be more consistent with my swing when hitting for power.
What’s your favorite food?
Definitely steak.
What’s your favorite kind of music?
I listen to a lot of country music and christian music.
What are some of your interests outside of baseball?
I like hanging out with friends, watching Netflix, and swimming.
