Jarren Duran, OF BOS (Triple-A) 2-for-5, 2 HRs
We saw the adjustments months ago, and now we see Duran putting them to use in game with his second and third bombs of the year, with one of these coming off a lefty. Not much time until he’s running around in Fenway Park.
Owen Miller, SS CLE (Triple-A) 3-for-4, 3B, 2B
We keep getting the same names on this rundown. Miller can hit. Lets go Redbirds!
Jesus Sanchez, OF MIA (Triple-A) 1-for-1, HR, BB
Familiar names everywhere. Sanchez has been crushing pitches and taking souls so far this year, but then he left the game with a leg injury. As of now I have no news on the injury timetable.
Deivi Garcia, RHP NYY (Triple-A) 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K
The Yankees best pitching prospect is just biding his time in the minors before he gets back to the Bronx. The small righty has a lively fastball and put-away curveball.
Spencer Howard, RHP PHI (Triple-A) 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Howard threw only 40 pitches in this abbreviated outing. He has to get stretched out if he’s going to help Philadephia soon.
Zach McCambley, RHP MIA (High-A) 7 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K
What an outing by the Marlins third rounder from Coastal Carolina. He was removed from the game after throwing 85 pitches through seven, and the perfect game was lost in the 8th inning. McCambley throws three pitches, a fastball, curveball and changeup and he commands his stuff so well. The depth chart in Miami is crowded but McCambley looks ready for Double-A.
Garrett Stallings, RHP BAL (High-A) 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Stallings was a fifth round pick by the Angels in the 2019 draft out of the University of Tennessee. He was traded over this past winter in the Jose Iglesias trade. Stallings is 6’2”, 200 pounds and the fastball works in the low-90s with some movement. He mixes in a curve, slider and change as well. Fantastic first two starts for Stallings, and he will jump into some lists if he keep performing.
Brett Baty, 3B NYM (High-A) 2-for-4, 2B, BB
Baty has been raking over the week plus of the minor league season so far, hitting .471. Him and Ronny Mauricio (who homered during this game) have been hitting in the middle of the lineup all season so far for Brooklyn. Rumor has it a former Mets prospect is making his debut this week. At least the ones they held on too are still hitting.
Jay Groome, LHP BOS (High-A) 2 ⅓ IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K
Not an encouraging outing from Groome. He did leave the game early after being hit in the shin by a line drive. Hopefully Groome can stay in the rotation and not miss time, he needs reps maybe more than everyone in minor league baseball.
Blaine Crim, 1B TEX (High-A) 2-for-4, HR
He’s back! Crim hitting homers on a whim, making pitchers grab their brim and contemplate taking a swim. I dunno man, that’s all I got. We just talked about Crim on the most recent pod. Grab him now as you should have spots in the minors to churn through.
Hunter Gaddis, RHP CLE (High-A) 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
2019 fifth rounder from Georgia State. Gaddis is a big dude with that innings eating build. He faced the minimum after hitting the leadoff batter and then picking him off. Justin Lada was at the game, I’ll let him tell you more.
Clayton Beeter, RHP LAD (High-A) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
The second one-inning outing for Beeter this season. Only including him here because there was some talk of an arm injury this spring but it appears he’s healthy enough to pitch through it, but also only going one inning at a time. Something to monitor.
Leonel Valera, SS LAD (High-A) 4-for-6, 3B
It’s been a rough go of it so far for Valera but hopefully this game helps get him out of it. He’s likely a utility future, but needs to show more with the bat to solidify that role.
Michael Harris II, OF ATL (High-A) 2-for-5, 2B
Harris got a lot of run in big league camp and looked like he belonged at times, so I’m sure it’s a bit of a letdown to end up in High-A, but it’s the correct assignment for the talented outfielder. Bryce Ball knocked in four runs behind Harris today, and that’s a fun middle of the order for a High-A club.
Chris McMahon, RHP COL (High-A) 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K
I feel bad for McMahon. It’s like the horror movie when your favorite supporting character is about to open the door where you know the killer is at. That’s how I feel about McMahon, who is living his best life now but knowing Coors Field is looming.
Tyler Keenan, 3B SEA (High-A) 3-for-5, HR, 2 2B, 5 RBI
Keenan crushed the ball tonight and Everett is one of my favorite minor league clubs to watch because of the lineup and deep pitching staff. With tonight’s three hit effort that raises his average to .125, if that gives you an idea of how much he was scuffling. I don’t have concerns though, as he was one of the better power hitters in the SEC and should be able to handle High-A pitching.
Julio Rodriguez, OF SEA (High-A) 3-for-4, HR, 2B, BB
People get a little down on Julio and then he goes and has a night like this. He might not be a top three prospect, but should still sit near the top of prospect lists. He’s hitting .345 with an OPS over 1.000 so far.
Andres Melendez, DH CLE (Low-A) 3-for-5, 2 2B
Melendez is a catching prospect that was DH’ing today. He was signed by the Brewers in 2017 and traded to the Indians in November 2019 for INF Mark Mathias. Melendez best skills are as a receiver and he has an above-average arm behind the plate as well. He hasn’t hit one over the wall yet but he’s off to a nice start in Lynchburg.
Xzavion Curry, RHP CLE (Low-A) 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K
The right-hander out of Georgia Tech is off to a fantastic start this season, with 12 strikeouts and just three hits allowed in nine innings of work. He’s a sub six-foot righty that works primarily up in the zone with a low-90s heater that can touch 94. He also throws a curveball and a change. Curry looks like a starter, and he’s a guy that’s jumped in value in this early going.
Mick Abel, RHP PHI (Low-A) 2 ⅔ IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K
PLive’s Joe Drake was in attendance to see Abel, and said Abel was up at 97-98 in the first inning but I’ll let Joe tell the rest of the story.
D.J. Stewart, 3B PHI (Low-A) 3-for-5, HR, 2B, 4 RBI
No, not Baltimore’s D.J. Stewart. This D.J. Stewart was a 39th round pick way back in the 2017 draft out of Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis. He’s had issues making contact in the past, but now he’s hitting the ball more often and with authority. He’s hit more homers this year than he has in his pro career. I don’t know much about him, but he keeps hitting so he gets a spot on the write-up.
Jared Kelley, RHP CWS (Low-A) 2 ⅔ IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
Another abbreviated outing for the 2020 second round pick. Kelley threw 68 pitches but only 36 were for strikes. He’s a big man and one of the concerns was the body and how it projects long term. Another concern was his lack of a breaking ball. I didn’t see the outing today so I can’t comment on specifics, but one the positive side he did strike out five hitters.
Hudson Head, OF PIT (Low-A) 2-for-3, 2 BB, SB
Acquired in the Joe Musgrove deal, Head has been off to a slow start thus far. All of his six hits have been singles and the average sits at .261 now. Hopefully this is the start of a good stretch for the tooled up Head.
Endy Rodriguez, C PIT (Low-A) 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI
Also acquired in the Joe Musgrove deal, but from the Mets, Rodriguez is a switch-hitting catcher that has shown excellent on-base skills and feel for the barrel thus far in his career. He’s working on adding power and improving his defensive skills. This could be a dude.
Jordan Walker, 3B STL (Low-A) 1-for-3, HR, BB
My Cardinals’ bias is showing by including Walker in the rundown since he had only one hit today, but that one was a monster. It travelled 434 feet at 111.1 MPH off the bat. A rocket. Walker is a physical specimen and he has a .500 OBP right now. Exciting stuff!
Eury Perez, RHP MIA (Low-A) 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
Perez throws fire, and drew 30 total swings all game and got a stunning 15 whiffs, which gives you an idea of how dominant he can look. His fastball topped out at 96.6, and around 2700 RPMs. He’s a million miles away but worth rostering in deeper leagues at this point. Here’s a tweet of him blowing away Jordan Walker
Gunnar Henderson, SS BAL (Low-A) 3-for-4, HR, BB, CS
If you paid attention to any of our podcasts this winter and even during the Covid shutdown you would know that we were all over Henderson as an impact player, and we aggressively ranked him in our fantasy lists. This is a #ProGunnar website. We’re going to need a new poster prospect after Brujan gets called up soon, maybe this is our man.
Heriberto Hernandez, OF TB (Low-A) 2-for-3, HR, BB
All this dude does is hit. Hernandez smacked his third homer of the young season in the 4th inning of today’s game. He’s been playing LF this season but his best long term fit is likely at DH, but no reason to commit to that until you absolutely have to. He’s hitting .368 with a 1.433 OPS so far. #HeribertoHits
Cole Wilcox, RHP TB (Low-A) 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Only one strikeout for Wilcox, but that’s the only nitpick here. The Georgia Bulldog has been unscored upon over 8 innings so far this year, and his power sinker has been too much for Low-A bats as he got nine outs on the ground in this game. Tampa is absolutely loaded with depth but in a thinner system this is a dude that could make an impact soon at the big league level, but not in this farm system.
Ryan Murphy, RHP SF (Low-A) 4 ⅔ IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 11 K
The Giants fifth rounder in 2020 out of Division II Le Moyne flat out shoved today with a dominant performance against a pretty strong Stockton lineup. Murphy is a command over stuff guy and despite being at a D-II school there’s a very good chance he’s too advanced for Low-A. Regardless this is the type of line you love to see and Murphy is one to hone in on for his next start.
Kyren Paris, 2B LAA (Low-A) 2-for-4, BB, 2 SB
Incredible. Paris has eight stolen bases so far on the year, and is running every time he gets on first or second base right now and still having success. He’s a fun player that has been covered a few times on the list.
Drew Romo, C COL (Low-A) 3-for-3, 2B, BB
Romo puts up his best game as a pro to this point with today’s game. Romo in full-season ball is an aggressive assignment for a 2020 draftee, but it tells a lot about his makeup and psyche if they think he can handle it.
Mateo Gil, 2B COL (Low-A) 3-for-4, 2B
Gil was one of the key pieces in the Nolan Arenado trade with STL. Gil has shown flashes offensively but hasn’t been able to sustain it yet. This is an important year for him, and I expect him to hit.
Jake Vogel, OF LAD (Low-A) 2-for-5
It’s been a weird year for Vogel, filled with some ups and downs. Today’s positive note is he banged out two hits. The bad? He struck out three times. He’s a double-plus speed guy that projects as a future leadoff man.
