The Minor League Daily Sheet: May 10th, 2021 - They Called Him Up

Only eight games on the slate tonight, six Triple-A matchups and a High-A doubleheader in Hillsboro. Short list tonight, so you’ll have to take a reasonable amount of time screwing around at work, as opposed to your usual inordinate amount.

Jarred Kelenic, OF SEA (Triple-A) 1-for-4

Called up to the majors, will join the major league club Thursday. Kelenic has looked like a major leaguer playing in Triple-A. He’s ready. I don’t really need to say much else at this point. He’s been the number one prospect for me for close to a year, and publicly on our site (at least fantasy wise) since the beginning of this year or the end of last year.

Jo Adell, OF LAA (Triple-A) 2-for-5, 2 HR, 5 RBI

Two tanks on the night. Is Adell locked in? YEP! . Adell needs a few months at Triple-A to adjust and settle in. He progressed quickly and was tasked with adjusting to major league pitching, and life, on the fly under incredibly unusual circumstances.

Nivaldo Rodriguez, RHP HOU (Triple-A) 5 IP, 3 H, BB, 5 K

Ranked 14th on our Astros list this winter and looks the part of the spot starter/long relief role we tagged him. He’s a command over stuff arm that locates his low-90s fastball well. He throws his breaking stuff hard, so in that sense he does have some stuff. His ability to manipulate his curveball and slider allow him to get outs. He’s also the owner of one of the more hilarious MiLB profile pictures

Jose Siri, OF HOU (Triple-A) 2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R

Don’t, don’t hurt me again, don’t, don’t hurt me again. I’m full on Teenage Love with Siri at the moment. He struck out twice. If he yelled at an umpire I believe that’s a Jose Siri hat trick. At this point you know the profile, he’s had some cups of coffee at the big league level but has never been a full time barista. The Astros are currently rolling out Kansas Hip-Hop Icon Myles Straw in center, he’s hitting .214. Dusty has the mask off like Future, let the toothpick breath and let Siri roam the Houston outfield.

Yonny Hernandez, SS TEX (Triple-A) 3-for-5, R, SB

Yonny is a 23 year old with 138 minor league stolen bases and a 70% success rate. He’s a high on base player with 20 power and 60 wheels. Not all that different from the aforementioned Myles Straw. He has five stolen bases on the young season.

Curtis Terry, 1B TEX (Triple-A) 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI

His fourth homer in five games, today’s member of the #massivehuman club is the 260 lbs Terry. He’s a big body, right/right first base only profile but it might be 70 power. He’s still only 24 so there’s a chance this is a platoon power bat at some point in the next few years.

Zach Reks, OF LAD (Triple-A) 1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, BB

Several tweaks and swing overhauls later and Reks has transformed into an on base driven power hitter. He’s not the caliber of player that cracks the Dodgers outfield but could probably fit in on a handful of major league rosters now. It’s a second division regular profile but he’s somewhat limited in the field.

Luis Barrera, OF OAK (Triple-A) 2-for-2, 3 R, BB

Continues to hit and get on base from the leadoff spot. There’s certainly enough offensive skill here for Barrera to slide into the outfield mix in Oakland, how soon it happens is still up in the air. There’s definite bat ball and on base ability.

Bryce Johnson, OF SFG (Triple-A) 4-for-4, RBI, 2 R

A speedy leadoff hitter that was selected in the 6th round of the 2017 draft out of Sam Houston State. He has 82 stolen bases over 305 minor league games. He’s 25 and maybe fits in as a fifth outfielder but it’s an up and down ceiling. Good night so he’s on the short schedule sheeeet.

Stuart Fairchild, OF ARI (Triple-A) 2-for-4, RBI, R, BB

Any time Fairchild does something you’re going to hear about it here. Those are the rules. I make them and won’t change them. Now, Fairchild showcased a little of everything I appreciate about him last night. Couple of hits, quality at bats, and a walk. Once he gets on a roll the power will come.

Conor Grammes, RHP ARI (High-A) 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 5 K

Up in the mid to upper 90s, showing his trademark slider and lack of command. He looked brilliant at moments as the stuff is very loud, but the lack of feel will likely push him to a pen role eventually.

Luis Frias, RHP ARI (High-A) 6 IP, 2 H, BB, 9 Ks

El Caballo was cruising on the night. Pumping his fastball by guys in the low to mid-90s and using his slider as his primary secondary. He looks the part with a thick lower half and strong build. He’s a passionate pitcher on the mound, exhibiting the swagger you love to see. He was incredibly efficient on the night cruising through the Eugene lineup and going six on just 74 pitches, landing 53 for strikes.

Corbin Carroll, OF ARI (High-A) 4-for-5, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB

How long until he’s promoted to Double-A? He’s hitting well north of .400 and was on base six times last night, showcasing power, contact, and speed across seven plate appearances. One of the top players in the minor leagues with the ceiling of dynamic lead off hitter at peak, scoring 100 runs and never an easy out. It’s not just the raw tools either, it’s smart baseball in its purest form every at bat. Taking what the pitcher gives him and making strong swing decisions.
