1. CJ Abrams, SS - 60 OFP
Age: 21 Highest Level: AA
2021 Pre-season Rank: 2 Pre-season OFP: 55
Hit | Power | Field | Arm | Run | Risk |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
60 | 40 | 55 | 50 | 80 | High |
PHYSICAL Wiry, athletic frame with some size and length. Live, athletic body with plenty of high-end twitch. Looks to have added some definition last season with more physical gains in store.
STRENGTHS Game-changing speed and athleticism in all facets. True 80-grade speed that impacts both sides. Immediate burst and quickness that stands out. Quick jumps with elite top-end speed to steal bags. Smart, instinctive runner. Plus bat-to-ball skills, lots of loud contact. Feel for the barrel continues to show. Quick hands and fluid wrists shoot through the zone. Shown some added strength gains at the plate. Crisp defender with swift movements that stick up the middle. Clean actions and transfers all around. Ability to impact a game in a multitude of ways. Tooled up profile with top-of-the-class speed that will translate at the highest level. Sneaky offensive upside, as well.
WEAKNESSES Tapping into consistent in-game power still remains a question. More strength at contact, but lacks over-the-fence power. More gap-to-gap in approach. Average arm strength, throws lack carry at times. Solid accuracy, but not enough consistent zip on throws. Future positions may lean toward second base and center field. Defensive fit is something to keep an eye on moving forward.
SUMMARY It was a shame not seeing a full season of Abrams in 2021. He is equipped with game-changing speed, and his athleticism oozes in all parts of his game. He has the ability to steal bags with ease and make plays up the middle defensively. The bat is coming around with more added power at spurts with his innate feel for the barrel. His overall profile is enticing, though some defensive concerns and consistency at the plate will need to be answered during a healthy 2022 and beyond.

2. Robert Hassell III, OF - 55 OFP
Age: 20 Highest Level: A+
2021 Pre-season Rank: 3 Pre-season OFP: 55
Hit | Power | Field | Arm | Run | Risk |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
60 | 50 | 55 | 55 | 55 | Moderate |
PHYSICAL Lean, athletic, highly projectable frame with room for more added strength. Stronger than initially appears with wiry fibers, yet still capable of stacking mass onto physical stature.
STRENGTHS One of the top pure left-handed hitters in the minors. Clean, efficient left-handed stroke with barrel lag through the zone and owns an innate feel for the barrel while capable of changing planes, too. Does not swing and miss much and likely will not swing and miss much; strong hand-eye coordination. Above-average runner and can play all three outfield spots, likely making an impact in left field but could hold his own in center field temporarily speaking. Arm plays well from the outfield; pitched in high school and has above-average arm strength for a corner outfielder.
WEAKNESSES Where his power lies may determine his ceiling. He is not engineered to drive the baseball out of the park and, right now, looks like a 15+ home run player with a high batting average. Has the hand-eye coordination and swing capabilities to sell-out for power, but that change in approach will likely lower his high contact rates. Swing change is needed if he wants to add consistent power over a 162-game stretch or get stronger. Adding mass may hinder his run times and limit him to a corner outfield role.
SUMMARY As things stand right now, Hassell owns some of the best bat-to-ball skills in minor league baseball and he’s a pretty safe bet to hit at the next level even though he’s only 20 years old. There’s a real chance that he’s a Michael Brantley type right now, but the main question will be, should he sacrifice some of that batting average for added power. Still, Hassell’s offensive skill-set is valuable as a top-of-the-order type run producer for several years.

3. Luis Campusano, C - 50 OFP
Age: 23 Highest Level: MLB
2021 Pre-season Rank: 4 Pre-season OFP: 50
Hit | Power | Field | Arm | Run | Risk |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
55 | 50 | 45 | 60 | 30 | Moderate |
PHYSICAL Compact, sturdy frame with definition throughout. Physical, strong body. Thick neck, sloping shoulders. Room to add strength; strong torso with modest projection left. Tapered lower half with a high waist and strong thighs. More room to add size with projection for future strength gains.
STRENGTHS Above-average hit tool with traits behind the dish. Ability to hit to all fields; barrel stays in the zone a long time. Struggled in limited at-bats in MLB, but has shown tremendous growth at the plate at every level. Mature approach that sees spin well. Flirts with above-average power to the pull side, but more average in-game. Plus arm strength behind the dish defensively. Intriguing combination of hit and defensive prowess behind the dish. Able to impact a major league roster. Can become an everyday level catcher.
WEAKNESSES Lacks the defensive prowess of an above-average catcher, as no tools really stand out fielding wise. Can be a bit stiff laterally, struggles to cover in the dirt. Receiving needs polish, several passed balls. Struggled in limited appearances in the big leagues, looked a bit overmatched against heat and spin. Didn’t cover much of the zone. Limited power to all fields, more of a hit-first ability that still needs seasoning. May need some seasoning to polish both sides of his game to reach his overall ceiling.
SUMMARY Campusano has shown the ability to hit and defend behind the dish at a high level. His strength and physicality is on display at times with towering pull-side homers, though his mature approach and hit tool stand out the most. His receiving and blocking ability still needs work, but the tools are present. He could benefit with some time to hone in on both sides of his game. He can become a solid everyday catcher if it all comes together.

4. MacKenzie Gore, LHP - 50 OFP
Age: 23 Highest Level: AAA
2021 Pre-season Rank: 1 Pre-season OFP: 60
Fastball | Curveball | Slider | Changeup | Command | Risk |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
60 | 50 | 55 | 55 | 45 | Extreme |
95-97 mph | 78-83 mph | 85-88 mph | 85-89 mph |
PHYSICAL Athletic, lanky frame. He’s maxed out the frame, too. Toned down is signature leg kick to help make his delivery more consistent. Easy operation from a high three-quarter arm slot.
STRENGTHS There are a lot of inconsistencies throughout Gore’s career. His fastball is reportedly in the upper 90’s during spring camp. If that his true, his fastball is in a double-plus conversation thanks to spin and the plane he throws it on. As of now, it’s a plus offering. The rest of his stuff is still extremely solid, with a deceptive changeup with armside fade and good velocity separation. His slider and curveball both can play well, with a mid-80’s sweeper being the better of the two. The arm talent is such that he could have four legitimate average or better offerings from the left side.
WEAKNESSES Consistency across the board is the biggest question surrounding the profile. His command is still fringe. He’s quieted down his mechanics quite a bit and that has helped his stuff play up once again. If he can find consistency he might be able to find shades of the dominant arm he was once thought to be.
SUMMARY It wasn’t long ago that Gore was almost without question the top pitching prospect in the game, but he’s fallen since then. His stuff and velocity both ticked down. Gone through a long road to reclaim some status and it starts with his velocity returning. If he’s in the upper-90’s with the fastball the rest of his stuff will play up too. Even if he just lives on three above average to plus pitches, his fourth average pitch will still be able to play. Consistency in both command and performance is key. He’s a starter that could reach the middle or front of a rotation if things are back to what they were a few years ago. The floor is also pretty low for someone with so much arm talent.

5. James Wood, OF - 50 OFP
Age: 19 Highest Level: CPX
2021 MLB Draft Rank: 37
Hit | Power | Field | Arm | Run | Risk |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
45 | 60 | 50 | 60 | 55 | High |
PHYSICAL XL frame with plenty of projection. Enticing blend of physicality and athleticism at his size with a physical frame to dream upon. Big upper half with good sized hands. Tall and lean in every sense of the word. Athletic build with strength that continues to develop.
STRENGTHS Produces easy power that ranks amongst the top of his draft class. Creates extension and great leverage at contact. Results are loud to the pull-side when squared, towering blasts. Good loft and carry in the path, credit to strength in his hands. Moves well for his size and shows athletic traits. Good athlete in the outfield. Plus arm strength and above-average speed. Quickness creeps up on you, able to stretch for extra bags. Shows some in-game power as he physically develops. Present upside. Tantalizing profile that will need time, but lots to dream upon for a prep bat.
WEAKNESSES Concerns remain with the overall hit tool and ability to tap into in-game power more consistently. Swing-and-miss in approach, can struggle against spin. Refinement and overall improvement of the hit tool is needed. Great athlete, but speed can be hindered if he adds more size to his frame. Making more consistent contact is key to unlocking his offensive ceiling, needs to tap in and develop.
SUMMARY Wood is an enticing prospect with his blend of physicality and athleticism. The power is legit with loud blasts to the pull side when squared. The results are fun when he’s able to drive one. His hit tool and approach needs time to really season, as some swing-and-miss is prevalent in the profile. The athlete is there defensively, but needs to be monitored as he physically develops. Wood has an array of loud tools and is one to keep a close eye on going forward.
