Miami Marlins 2022 Top 30 Prospects

This off-season we set off to write our first book. Changes and challenges arose, so we've pivoted to releasing our top prospect lists & reports through the site and our Patreon. We're excited to finally show you the hard work of our evaluating team the last few months.

Below you'll find the top 10 players in the system with full reports of the top 5. The full rankings and reports on all top 30 prospects per team will be available on our Patreon at the 55-tier ($5 level) as we publish them. If you're into fantasy baseball, this tier also gets you the dynasty show, the FYPD list and the MiLB Daily Sheet in season. We plan to add all the reports to player pages on the site shortly after the season begins.

1. Eury Perez, RHP - 60 OFP

Age: 19 Highest Level: A+
Pre-Season Rank: 17 Pre-Season OFP: 45

Fastball Curveball Changeup Command Risk
70 55 55 50 Extreme
94-96 mph 77-83 mph 87-89 mph

PHYSICAL  Extremely tall, long frame with a very high-waisted lower half. Nowhere near fully developed physically with plenty of room to add good weight. Imposing figure on the mound with long limbs. Creates a ton of deception with his frame and a low 3/4 slot. There’s some effort in the delivery, but shows the ability to repeat well.

STRENGTHS  Explosive plus-plus fastball that lives in the mid 90s with even more projectable velocity. Above-average induced vertical break that shows impressive life at the top of the zone. Impressive command with the power curveball that he will throw in any count, and has shown ability to miss barrels by manipulating the pitch’s shape. Changeup looks to be a potential put-away pitch with late glove side tumble, looking unhittable to left-handed hitters. Creates a ton of swing and miss with the fastball/changeup combo, and will fill up the zone with the curveball. Shows a ton of polish for a teenager against much older competition.

WEAKNESSES  Can overthrow and miss in the dirt with the fastball at times. Still needs to show consistency throwing strikes with the changeup. Delivery takes some effort through finish, and will need to slightly clean up as he continues to develop.

SUMMARY  Perez stepped into his first pro season and immediately showed mid-rotation upside. He demonstrated the ability to throw three above-average pitches for strikes while missing a ton of barrels against quality competition. There’s some polish here you rarely see in an 18-year-old which allows you to be even more bullish on the upside if everything continues to click. There’s a ton of risk due to age, but Perez has started to quickly check boxes that would keep him in a rotation for the long haul.

2. Max Meyer, RHP - 60 OFP

Age: 22 | Highest Level: AAA
Pre-Season Rank: 1 | Pre-Season OFP: 60

Fastball Slider Changeup Command Risk
55 70 50 55 High
93-96 mph 85-89 mph 83-87 mph

PHYSICAL  Small wiry frame with good present strength and loose hips. Shows fluid athleticism with ease of his windup and mechanics. Live, explosive arm that is the result of smooth, whippy arm action. Shows potential to add more strength to the lower and upper body.

STRENGTHS  The slider is a grim reaper with excellent horizontal break and plus spin. On top of that, Meyer shows great feel to command the slider in the zone and out of the zone. Fastball has plus spin and can be thrown for a strike in any count. Generates weak contact on slider and changeup.

WEAKNESSES  Inconsistent changeup command limits legitimate repertoire to two pitches. Fastball also shows a very average movement profile and comes across as flat in the zone. Fails to tunnel changeup well in with fastball at release.

SUMMARY Very dynamic arm with possibly the most potent slider in all the minors. Shows true feel on how to execute pitches with sequencing and control. Highly volatile delivery and reliance on the slider presents high-octane reliever risk. Development of changeup command and usage will determine if he can be a front-line starter.

3. Kahlil Watson, SS - 55 OFP

Age: 19 Highest Level: CPX
2021 MLB Draft Rank: 8

Hit Power Field Arm Run Risk
50 55 55 55 60 High

PHYSICAL  Tremendous athlete with some projection remaining to a strong, yet slender frame. Has some length to his limbs, a twitchy athlete with broad shoulders and a very strong core. Came out of this most recent draft cycle with some of the best upside available.

STRENGTHS  If there is one thing you need to know about Watson, it’s his quick hands and lightning-quick bat speed. He has one of the more photogenic swings in recent memory. He’s got an uncanny ability to generate impressive hip/shoulder separation which lets him tap into above-average power, especially to his pull-side. This spring, he started showing more pop to all fields. Looked very comfortable against top competition last summer. In the field, he’s a smooth defender with a strong arm and great instincts that could play both middle infield positions. More than likely fits better at second base in the future.

WEAKNESSES  Watson’s approach could use some ironing out. It’s an aggressive power-over-hit approach at the plate, ambushing fastballs whenever he gets the chance. The more advanced pitching Watson sees, the more adjustments that are necessary for him to make at the plate. With the arm, he showed a slight tendency to sail throws missing his target. Accuracy will be a main development point moving forward.

SUMMARY  With Watson, the Marlins may have gotten the steal of the 2021 MLB Draft. He’s an all-around exciting athlete with a fun toolset at the plate that draws some comparisons to Jazz Chisholm. Don’t be surprised if he gets moved off of the shortstop position, but it’s hard not to love what he has done over the past year.

4. Edward Cabrera, RHP - 55 OFP

Age: 23 Highest Level: MLB
Pre-Season Rank: 6 Pre-Season OFP: 50

Fastball Slider Changeup Command Risk
60 60 55 45 High
96-99 mph 86-89 mph 89-93 mph

PHYSICAL  Extra large frame. Broad shouldered with plus present strength in the chest. Very long limbs move with ease due to plus athleticism. Legs are filled out with good strength. Fluid and balanced operation, pitches with nice rhythm and intent. Attacks hitters by getting out over the chest with a high 3/4 arm slot. Frame is near maxed out with potential for another 10-15 lbs.

STRENGTHS  Generates weak contact off of the fastball with its plus arm side run and downhill plane. Sharp movement off his slider is a whiff machine. Nasty hard changeup has its bottom fall out with above average sink. All three of his pitches play well off one another with differentiating movement planes.

WEAKNESSES  Struggles repeating his delivery pitch after pitch. Hasn’t always been able to locate quality strikes in the zone as opposed to around the zone. Changeups can flatten out from being overthrown.

SUMMARY  Cabrera has three above average pitches but the extent of his success as a starter will be predicated on his ability to locate strikes in and around the zone with intent. His flashes of pitchability show he can be a frontline starter as opposed to a bullpen arm.

5. Sixto Sanchez, RHP - 55 OFP

Age: 23 Highest Level: MLB
Pre-Season Rank: 2 Pre-Season OFP: 55

Fastball Cutter Slider Changeup Command Risk
70 40 55 60 55 High
91-98 mph 82-86 mph 82-86 mph 87-89 mph

PHYSICAL  Medium frame with high waist, stocky torso, and rounded shoulders. No projection left in frame, but could go on a cut to add more strength. Short live arm action with little extension and plus arm speed. Fluid drop and drive action in windup.

STRENGTHS  Explosive fastball with slight arm-side run. High velocity and plus vertical approach angle allows fastball to generate whiffs up in the zone. Wicked changeup acts as a true out pitch with above average fade and sink. Is able to tunnel changeup well with fastball and repeatable release. Shows plus command and feel for the slider, can manipulate in and out of the zone on command. Knows how to manipulate pitches to play up in certain parts of the zone.

WEAKNESSES  Cutter is prone to flattening out and acting as a “nothing fastball” to the hitter. Flat vertical approach angle and little vertical break on the fastball cause it to get hammered when in the middle and low part of the zone. Fails to generate as many whiffs as quality of stuff would suggest. Slider spin rate is too similar to fastball, limiting its potential to generate more horizontal or vertical break. Lacks distinct movement and spin profiles for fastball, slider, and cutter.

SUMMARY  Very dynamic and live arm with advanced feel for pitch sequencing, manipulation, and usage. Dynamic fastball and change combo allow him a future in the rotation as a front of the rotation starter.  Possess the stuff and intangibles to reach an ace ceiling but the development of his physique, spin, and pitch movement will be the determining factor. Health has always been an issue here also.
