Before the playoffs started, we gathered several writers to list their top three in each of the Cy Young, MVP and Rookie of the Year for each league. Last year we were a 5-for-6 as a group. Can we get perfection?
Here are the voting results
AL MVP
Shohei Ohtani - 35 points 🥇
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. - 24 points 🥈
Marcus Semien - 8 points 🥉
Carlos Correa - 2 points
Aaron Judge - 1 point
Salvador Perez - 1 point
This is about as close to a gimme as possible. Shohei Ohtani’s season was so unique that he even won the MLB Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award, only the 16th time it’s been awarded. You’re usually going to take home some shiny hardware when you win that bad boy.
NL MVP
Juan Soto - 25 points 🥇
Bryce Harper - 21 points 🥈
Trea Turner - 19 points 🥉
Fernando Tatis Jr. - 6 points
Max Scherzer - 1 point
Here’s an interesting one only because Trea Turner was fairly in the running for the top spot in our internal voting but he wasn’t part of the finalists in the real thing with Tatis taking the final spot. Like the NL Cy Young last year, this is the only award we feel like could go to either Harper or Soto with no clear winner. Do you prefer Soto’s historic second half? Or Harper’s excellent performance boosted by his team’s proximity to the playoffs?
AL Cy Young
Robbie Ray - 30 points 🥇
Gerrit Cole - 26 points 🥈
Nathan Eovaldi - 8 points 🥉
Frankie Montas - 1 point
Dylan Cease - 1 point
Liam Hendriks - 1 point
Carlos Rodon - 1 point
When we started voting internally in early October, it dawned on us how barren the AL Cy Young landscape is. It’s a two-horse race and we’re betting Ray takes it thanks to his consistency all year. Gerrit Cole also has a bit of a stain based on his sudden tanking the moment MLB announced its ban on the sticky stuff. It’s little things like that that’ll make a difference at the top.
NL Cy Young
Corbin Burnes - 28 points 🥇
Zack Wheeler - 19 points 🥈
Max Scherzer - 11 points 🥉
Walker Buehler - 8 points
Julio Urias - 3 points
A fairly easy victory for Corbin Burnes for us. The big question facing voters with Corbin Burnes is how much do they value per inning performance. He had 46 fewer innings than Wheeler, which is not an insignificant amount. And of course if you’re a staunch believer in value provided to a team, does it get better than Max Scherzer who went 7-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 68.1 IP with the Dodgers?
AL Rookie of the Year
Randy Arozarena - 28 points 🥇
Wander Franco - 23 points 🥈
Luis Garcia - 9 points 🥉
Adolis Garcia - 6 points
Shane McClanahan - 4 points
Emmanuel Clase - 1 point
Akil Baddoo - 1 point
Despite 162 PA between regular season and postseason in 2020, Randy kept his eligibility and made good on it by delivering a 20/20 year. If his teammate Wander Franco had been up all year he likely takes this, but alas.
NL Rookie of the Year
Jonathan India - 30 points 🥇
Trevor Rogers - 25 points 🥈
Dylan Carlson - 9 points 🥉
Jazz Chisholm - 4 points
Patrick Wisdom - 2 points
Ke’Bryan Hayes - 1 point
Tyler Stephenson - 1 point
Phil Bickford - 1 point
We’re wondering if this will be as close as it was in our voting. India gets the edge because Trevor Rogers missed all of August and was fairly limited down the stretch in September, cooling the jets on his RoTY campaign a bit. That’s not to take anything away from India who tapped into more power as the season went on and solidified himself as a cornerstone piece for Cincinnati.
