There are no winners or losers in the draft. That is an exercise in futility and a disservice to the players themselves. That said, a few teams have really stood out for bringing in exemplary talent both in quality and quantity.

Eschewing small ball and emphasizing plate discipline certainly helps UCSB put up runs, but it’s also old hat. Even if college baseball has been slower than MLB to modernize (especially in terms of run production), the game will get there eventually. If there’s a more nuanced lesson to be learned from the Gauchos, then, it seems to be in the power of mentality, enabling players to flourish by challenging them to be the best version of themselves.
From a scouting perspective knowing less can be an advantage. It shields you from preconceived notions. Working in the media space, I felt it important to at least have cursory understanding of dudes on each team, but there is undeniable value to otherwise knowing as little as possible. Your evaluation should be a blank canvas to paint on. Truly original opinions can only be developed through untainted first-hand accounts and observations. That was what I tried to do at the MLB4 Tournament and again last weekend when Oregon State came into town to face Nebraska.
D1 college baseball season has finally begun. It’s that time of the year where college squads flee from the hostile environment up north in to Florida in hopes for some warm weather and sunshine. They got just that as we have live looks from the UConn and Lousville series as well as a look at top draft prospect Kyle Brnovich at Elon.
If you could imagine baseball being played in heaven, or whichever divine afterlife you choose, what would it look like? What would the park or stadium be like? Who’s playing in the game? All-time greats? Kids? Angels? Victoria Secret Angels? While you ponder an all model baseball game, and question if the trade off of in-game quality is worth the eye candy. Let me tell you about my heaven.
