12/27 LIDOM RECAP: Jeremy Pena continues to excel in LIDOM action

The LIDOM playoffs are underway, and it is time for an update on how players faired in today’s matchup.

Estrellas Orientales (8) vs Leones del Escogido (4)  — 9 inn

ESTRELLAS ORIENTALES

  • Robinson Cano was one of the bright spots, going 2 for 4, solo home run in the first inning, give Orientales a 1-0 lead at the time, and followed his next at-bat with a three-run home run in the third inning, to provide Orientales with four runs in today’s game.

  • One of MLB’s brightest stars, Fernando Tatis Jr. had a quiet performance today, going 0 for 2 with an HBP and a BB.

  • Lewin Diaz, young first baseman for the Miami Marlins, did not have an ‘eye popping’ performance, and would eventually leave the game with an injury, but was able to collect a hit, in two trips to the plate.

  • Domingo Leyba, who is looking to revitalize his career after some PED use and injuries, went 2 for 3 with two singles.

  • C: Christian Bethancourt, who recently signed a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, gave the Phillies something to feel good about today. He went 2 for 4, with an RBI single to center field, to give the club a go-ahead lead in the 6th inning, and a solo home run in the 8th inning, to provide Orientales with an extra cushion, before closing out the ball game with a victory. The former catching prospect will look to try and make a comeback attempt with Philadelphia.

  • Jeremy Pena continues to be a bright spot for the Houston Astros, going 2-for-5 with a lead-off single in the 3rd inning, and a two-run home run to left field to give the club a 7-4 lead in the 6th inning. The infielder also demonstrated his versatility by playing both second and third base, and should be an exciting player to watch, as we inch closer to 2021 and the start of a new baseball season!

LEONES DEL ESCOGIDO

  • It was a day to forget for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who had a rough day at the plate, by going 0 for 4, and reaching base once by an error. Have no fear, the rising star for the Toronto Blue Jays will look to put the 0 for 4 performance behind him, and find new ways to come through for Escogido, as the playoffs extend into tomorrow.

  • St. Louis Cardinals catching prospect Julio E. Rodriguez, went 1 for 2, with a single in the 3rd inning, and a BB in the 4th inning, to force in a run for Escogido.

  • San Diego Padres minor league INF: Ivan Castillo, who is looking to make a name for himself, heading into the 2021 baseball season, went 2 for 4, with an infield RBI groundout in the 3rd inning, and a base hit in the 9th inning.

  • Estevan Florial, who has seen a decline in prospect rankings over the past couple of baseball seasons, might be starting to regain his form again, that made him one of the most highly touted prospects in the New York Yankees farm system. The outfielder had a solid LIDOM season with a .280 AVG, 1 HR, 5 RBI, .373 OBP, and went 3 for 3 in the matchup versus Orientales, with three singles to all parts of the field, and a walk. His performance thus far gives fans and Yankee executives a potential player to watch closely, as spring training rolls around the corner, to see if his LIDOM performance can translate to the state side in 2021.
