12/14 LIDOM Recap: Veteran bats help Los Toros come back

While everyone was thinking about what Cleveland was going to name their baseball team, there was actual baseball on Monday night in the LIDOM as all six teams were in action.

Gigantes del Cibao (5) Leones del Escogido (2)

Gigantes del Cibao

  • Alfredo Marte went 3-for-5

  • Pirates prospect Oneil Cruz went 0-for-3

  • Royals third baseman Kelvin Gutiérrez went 1-for-4 and is batting .303 so far for Los Gigantes

  • Just signed lefty Matt Dermondy, who was last with the Cubs, struck out four in 1.1 innings pitched.

Leones del Escogido

  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr went 1-for-3 with a hit and a walk

  • Gregory Polanco went 1-for-4, driving in one of the two Leones runs

  • Marlins prospect Joe Dunand cooled off yesterday, going 0-for-3

  • Ageless Fernando Rodney pitched another scoreless inning last night. On the season, he has pitched 6 innings, allowing just 2 hits.

Estrellas Orientales (5) Aguilas Cibaeñas (6)

Estrellas Orientales

  • The Estrellas used nine pitchers yesterday in a bullpen start. Andy Otero, a lefty that was once in the Braves system, was the starter, allowing two hits over four innings and striking out five.

  • Diamondbacks prospect Domingo Leyba went 3-for-4 and drove in an RBI. He is batting an even .300 so far in winter league action.

  • Pardes catcher Francisco Meija had a rough day at the plate, going 0-for-6.

Aguilas Cibaeñas

  • Mets infielder Robel Garcia went 2-for-5

  • Infielder Wilmer Difo, formerly of the Nationals, went 2-for-5 and drove in 3 to lead the Cibaeñas attack

  • The Cibaeñas bullpen definitely made things interesting, but Orioles farmhand Marcos Diplan kept the Cibaenas in the game in extra innings, pitching three innings, allowing one run, walking three but striking out four.

Tigres del Licey (7) Toros del Este (10)

Tigres del Licey

  • Royals prospect Dennicher Carrasco went 1-for-4 with a double that drove in two runs

  • White Sox catcher/DH Yermin Mercedes went 2-for-5 and drove in a run

  • Looking to catch on a rotation somewhere in 2021, Ervin Santana started for los Tigres, going three innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out six and allowing three walks. So far in winter league action, he has allowed 16 hits over 15.2 innings pitched, allowing 16 runs with 20 strikeouts.

Toros del Este

  • Yasiel Puig, also looking for a spot on a major league roster, walked three times, scoring three runs, and went 1-for-2 at the plate.

  • Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez had just one hit on the night but that was a double in the eighth inning, scoring two.

  • His teammate, Domingo Germán, struggled again for Los Toros, as he didn’t make it out of the first, allowing four runs. His ERA in the LIDOM is now 7.16

  • Detroit Tigers infielder Jeimer Candelario went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles

  • Indians lefty reliever Anthony Gose continues his impressive run in the Toros bullpen, pitching a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts.
