Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 3
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Listed at 6'0, 190. Medium build. Muscular arms and shoulders. Narrow frame, particularly in hips, caps potential physical projection.

Hit: Upright, slightly open stance with hands behind head. Small leg kick as timing mechanism. Pretty fluid weight transfer as left-handed hitter; a little stiffer and forced from the right side. Above-average bat speed as LHH; average bat speed as RHH. Current bat path is suboptimal; chops downhill and limits the amount of time his bat is on plane and in the hitting zone. Has good, strong hands through contact when he finds the barrel. Average bat control as LHH, fringe as RHH. Patient approach with discerning strike zone feel from both sides. Might be some swing-and-miss in his game but picks good pitches and peppers the gaps with solid contact, so he should compensate with high BABIPs. Grade: 50

Power: Fringe-average raw power. Bat path issues prevent him from lifting the ball and check current in-game power, but there's some potential for growth with a swing adjustment. Grade: 40

Field: Warren showed average infield actions at third base on the Cape in 2019. Converted to catcher his junior season at CMU but didn't get much in-game experience because of the COVID-19 shutdown. Will be interesting to see his development behind the plate (Milwaukee announced him as a catcher on draft day) but has floor of average defense at third in his back pocket. Grade: 50

Arm: Above-average arm strength was sufficient to make necessary plays at third and should be fine behind the plate. Grade: 55

Run: Below-average to fringe-average home-to-first times in summer ball. Grade: 45

Overall: Warren's a really interesting third-round flier. It's a collection of generally average physical tools but he has a track record of performance. Warren was one of the most productive players in the MAC during his time at Central Michigan and, more importantly for his pro evaluation, showed well on the Cape the summer before his draft year. He's got interesting offensive traits, particularly as a left-handed hitter- bat speed, strike zone feel, bat control- and a bat path adjustment could help him get to some in-game power. If a mechanical tweak enables him to hit for a little more power or if he proves to be a viable defensive catcher, he's a quality MLB role player. If both those things click, he's an above-average everyday player.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Russ Peters

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Stocky and thick, specifically in the bottom half. Definitely closer to 210 lbs. than the 185 he is listed at. Slightly low waisted. Solid pitcher's build.

Delivery & Mechanics: 3/4 arm slot, works fairly quickly. Uses a pretty low effort and repeatable delivery with good balance. Hides the ball well to create some deception during wind up and delivery.

Fastball: Pitch was average when it was working 91-94 with armside run. Reports from instructs have Castaneda pumping 95-96. If the velo sticks this can be a plus pitch. The fastball, when combined with the splitter discussed below, has a history of keeping hitters off balance. Added velocity will make splitter/fastball combo even more devastating. Grade: 55

Curveball: Thrown at 77-79. Used mostly as a get me over or show me pitch, sometimes for strike one. Appears that hitters have an easy time spotting the spin out of his hand and either lay off or square it up. Often flat with little break and more of a slider shape with a bit more velocity (low 80's). Neither of these pitches are above fringe level at this point. Will need an improvement in breaking pitches in order to have a chance at a spot in the rotation. Grade: 45

Splitter: Castaneda's nastiest pitch. Drops off the table when it gets to the plate. Used as a put away pitch but he is not afraid to throw it in just about any count. Actually controls splitter better than fastball. Delivery is very similar to the fastball which keeps hitters guessing, especially with the added velo noted above. This pitch could already give Major League hitters trouble. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Command has been an issue in the past. It appears that progress has been made in this area when looking at appearances from the 2019 Arizona Fall League and hearing reports from the 2020 fall instructional league. If this continues Castaneda will be working with average control and fringe average command. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Assuming the added velo and command were not an aberration, Castaneda has made significant progress towards making the big leagues sometime during the 2021 season where he profiles best as a power arm out of the bullpen who can pile up the strike outs. Used as a reliever and closer during the 2019 regular season and as a starter in the Arizona Fall League. Becoming a successful back of the rotation starter is not out of the question. If he proves himself out of the pen when he is called up, however, there is a good chance he is destined for late inning work in close games. 2021 is a big year where Castaneda can prove that these improvements are legit and sustainable.

Evaluator: Isaiah Burrows

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2016 Round 1
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Small and wiry frame with solid physical traits. Strong and compact upper half, filled out size. Sound lower half with strong legs. Has reached full maturity in physical development.

Hit: Violent left-handed swing with several moving parts. Hands drift apart, rock back-and-forth and remain well above the letters. Lower half stays hips apart, close and compact. Swing needs tinkering. Upper and lower fail to connect at times. Head pulls up at contact. Makes the majority of his contact pull-side to left field. Inconsistent results at the plate. Shows glimpses of hard contact, yet struggles with pitch recognition and strikeouts. Needs to improve his plate discipline and swing for offensive success. Grade: 40

Power: Average raw power as contact struggles plague its potential. When his swing connects, raw power truly shines with moonshots to right field. Has good hand speed and raw power from the left side. Sells out for power for inconsistent results. Grade: 50

Field: Fielding grades as average across the board. Has good speed to cover ground in center field. Shows solid range and quickness. Lacks eye-popping defensive awareness and ability. Shows the skills necessary to stick in center field. Grade: 50

Arm: Fringe-average arm strength from center field. Throws lack consistent velocity and accuracy. Puts extra effort into his motion and delivery. Arm strength continues to improve with each season. Grade: 45

Run: Plus-speed with good quickness and burst. Great acceleration out of the box. Adaptive base stealer, picks his jumps wisely. Hustles for extra bases. Speed makes up for weak contact results at times, beats out softly hit ground balls. Athletic traits should translate well to the next level. Grade: 45

Overall: Ray's injury and struggles have plagued him to this point, as his lack of plate discipline and contact limit his true offensive ceiling. He shows glimpses of above-average power, but doesn't show it enough consistently to grade out. His speed and defensive abilities bode well to his overall profile, but he must improve offensively.

Evaluator: Rhys White

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 181 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/L
Acquired: 2018 Round4
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Good height with a frame that should be able to handle more weight. He has long legs with long arms that have some physical projection to go.

Delivery & Mechanics: He tends to vary the timing mechanisms in his mechanics but he does release the ball from the same three-quarters arm-slot. It is not normal to see a pitcher play around with so many timing mechanisms. He messes around with a Kershaw-esque leg pump and drives towards the mound. Ashby will also use a leg-kick and stop at the top of the motion before driving down. He will also do a minimal leg-kick. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for why he does this, and will oftentimes use multiple timing mechanisms during the same at bat.

Fastball: Ashby has two variations of the fastball. He has a four-seam fastball that plays best up in the zone, that has below average spin (hovering around 2100 rpms) and can get up to 94. He will also mix in a two-seamer that also tops out at 94 but gets a bit more spin sitting slightly below 2200 rpms. He tries to mix in both fastballs early and often to both handedness of batters. He becomes too reliant on the two fastballs and doesn't mix in the other offerings enough. I noticed that hitters make a decent amount of contact off of the fastballs. He lacks consistent command of the two fastballs, and pairing that with the above average velocity and below average spin rates you get two fastballs that play close to average. Grade: 50

Curveball: Ashby's curveball has standard 12-6 shape and he loves to use it late in counts to elicit swings and misses and potentially strikeouts. The curveball is best spotted in the lower part of the strike-zone where it can entice hitters and then fall out of the strike-zone. It generates below-average spin (peaks at just higher than 2500 rpms) and has above average vertical beak. Grade: 55

Slider: Ashby's slider is a low 80's offering with above average spin(clocking in at 2600 rpms). It doesn't have very much shape variation from the curveball and at times just looks like a curveball that doesn't get the downwards movement. He does throw the slider up in the zone, which plays well off of the four-seam fastball. He doesn't generate swings and misses with the slider, using it as a show me offering to grab a strike. Grade: 45

Changeup: Ashby lacks feel for his changeup, which hurts the changeup. He limits the exposure of the changeup, but will use it late in counts. It gets inconsistent tumble and fade, due to his lack of feel for the offering. If it is not spotted in the lower parts of the strike-zone it is very hiteable and leads to hard contact. Grade: 40

Control and Command: The command and control are both below average. He was experimenting with his delivery and timing mechanisms so that did not do him any favors. The hope is he settles on a consistent delivery and can make a slight step forward in both the command and control aspects of his game. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: I do not envision Ashby being a starter for much longer, and with more muscle and not having to preserve his stuff, there is some hope that his stuff takes a step forward. He needs to figure out his delivery as well, and have some semblance of consistency there. The command and control limit his upside to remain a starter, which should ultimately push him to the pen where he can focus on the fastball and curveball.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Ian Smith

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Athletic, lanky frame that shows maximum level of projection. Broad shoulders with long levers that have plenty of room to add mass. Has started to fill out significantly since signed in 2018.

Hit: Right handed hitter who starts with his feet even in a shoulder width base. Upright stance. Hands sit high with the barrel sitting on his shoulder until he begins a moderate leg kick trigger. Hands stay active throughout the swing and his front half will flash open early on occasion. Bat path is surprisingly short for his frame, and finishes long through the ball. Bat speed is slightly above average with some projection remaining as he fills out. Can pick up offspeed well and currently works an all fields contact approach, with flashes of impacting the ball for power. There will be a solid discrepancy in present and future hit grades as we see how his hands will work against high level velocity as he gets into A ball and above. Grade: 50

Power: An all fields approach combined with a still wiry frame hinder the current power profile. Will show some flashes of plus raw power pull side in BP, but not enough information to say that will translate into game power. Bat path and overall frame will be conducive to more power in the future, but hands will need to get a bit more quiet to tap into it. Grade: 45

Field: High level athleticism. Shows plus range moving in both directions with quick feet and advanced positioning. His length allows him to get in front or reach most balls in the hole. Hands are very soft and lightning quick when attacking the ball, and showed impressive actions on glove to hand transfer on film. Bends extremely well for his size and his flexibility on pivots stand out. Ideal body and actions to be a plus glove at SS long term. Grade: 60

Arm: Big time carry across the diamond. Shows ability to get strong throws from multiple arm angles with accuracy. Can easily make throws on the run and rarely needs to leave his feet to make a play. Likely to add more arm strength as he continues to fill out. Grade: 60

Run: Very limited looks at his foot speed. 7.00 runner in the 60. Will get a good first step out of the box but doesn't possess great food speed. Long legs and stride will help the overall grade, but it's not something that's likely to improve as he matures. Grade: 45

Overall: Special abilities in the middle infield. Glove has a chance to skyrocket Garcia through the lower levels of the minors. Batted ball profile is likely to stick as a contact/gap power type of power, with an outside hope he can grow into some raw strength as he grows into his uber-projectable frame. Fringe everyday profile with the all around skills to meet a high end utility floor.

Age: 18 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Compact, athletic frame with some projection remaining. Wide shoulders and wide lower half stand out. Has added significant muscle since signing in 2019.

Hit: Right handed hitter works out of an open stance with wide base. Stance is slightly crouched with his hands coming in right above the shoulder. Gets a quick leg kick while the hands drift back. Gets good bat wrap and barrel lags through the zone. Hands are active to start but quiet before contact. Will take a swing happy approach at times. Shows plus bat speed with a linear bat path that works a line drive approach. Will keep GB% minimal. Zone contact ability stood out in instructs among the recent J2 signings Grade: 50

Power: Makes loud contact consistently. Puts himself into quality attack angles and has an optimized bat path for future power potential as his frame develops. EVs currently averaging 89 with a max 100 Grade: 55

Field: 1.91-1.95 Pop times. Operates with one knee down at all times behind the plate, but flexibility still shows through. Shows plus blocking abilities and soft hands to keep balls out front. Makes a clean and quick transfer on throws. Shows good range in both directions, and earned impressive reviews on his framing and leadership during instructs Grade: 55

Arm: Gets good carry and will get his weight behind throws in the limited looks available. Good transfers and quick hands allow the ball to get out on time consistently. Likely to add strength as he matures Grade: 55

Run: Limited information on the run tool, but Quero shows the athleticism to be a capable runner. Longer legs for his frame will help the overall grade if his body stays right Grade: 40

Overall: Bat has taken a big jump since signing in 2019. Now offers a higher ceiling as an all around backstop, rather than just glove first. Profiles to be an everyday player with a very solid floor given the ability in the glove and potential to stick behind the plate. Had one of the loudest overall performances at Brewers instructs against competition much older, and will look to parlay that into a full season of success in 2021. We're hedging some due to a lack of game looks, but there's a real chance he plays himself into a 50 OFP come 2022.

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 CBB
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Strong, thick frame that retains a little athleticism. Looks every bit of listed 6'1, 200. Maxed out. Big, strong legs and butt. Broad, muscled shoulders. Strong back, but room for weight in the chest. Built like a catcher. Soreness in throwing arm, April 2018; Arthroscopic surgery on throwing shoulder, November 2018.

Hit: Upright stance with the hands above the head and the bat angled flat back over the body. Slightly wider than average stance with the lead foot open by half a foot length and the heel off the ground. Nearly completely still, just a slight bat circle. Moderate, deliberate leg kick that comes waist-high and strides closed. Minor torso/hip coil. Hands drop sharp and late to the back shoulder before the swing. Quick bat, strong hands. Swing path has downward action to it; high finish. Heavy line drive profile with a few more grounders than fly balls. Aggressive approach, swings at most pitches in the zone, even on the first pitch; leads him to expand a bit. Borderline swing-happy. Swings very hard and overswings frequently. Whiffs often; mishits some he should square up. All or nothing approach and won't walk unless you make him, but when he makes contact, he blisters the ball. Grade: 45

Power: Plus raw power that comes from his strong frame and hands. Launched a ball well over the 24-foot wall in the opposite gap in Carolina. Swings very hard and looks to lift the ball which helps his power play in games. Would benefit from lifting the ball a little more, but isn't a groundball machine. Swing and miss and lack of selectiveness at the plate keep him from maximizing his pop. Grade: 55

Field: Calls his own games. Mixes between low crouch, one-knee, and half split stances. Typically stays in crouch with runners on. Average receiver; presents well but glove moves a little at reception on most pitches. Stabs occasionally. Some drops. Framing is fringe-average; could be a little smoother and could frame a little more at times. PIcks balls in the dirt confidently. Athletic behind the plate. Missed a year of development and it shows in his lack of polish; would benefit from electronic zone. Ability to stick behind the plate will depend on development in upper minors and team's tolerance for below-average catcher defense. Grade: 45

Arm: 2.01 and 1.94 pop times in game. Quick transfer and release aid solid arm strength. Generally on target. Grade: 55

Run: Runs decent for a catcher. Below-average home to first times. Not station to station on the bases, but not going 1st to 3rd on many singles either. Can leg out a triple when the outfielder boots it, but generally doesn't take an extra base unless it's gifted. Solid baserunning acumen, just lacks speed. Grade: 40

Overall: Power over hit, bat-first catcher who may struggle to stick behind the plate without further development. Swing-happy approach may get him in trouble with advanced pitching, but does enough damage to potentially offset high K-rates. Defense lacks polish but shows the building blocks of an average catcher. He's likely a fringe everyday backstop with a floor a once-a-week backup and ceiling of an All-Star who wins the Silver Slugger at catcher. Reminiscent of Gary Sanchez.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: B/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft, Round 5
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Lean, wiry middle infielder with twitch and flair. Rounded shoulders with a stocky core, but leaner levers. Explosiveness in athletic movements. Lacking impact strength. Switch-hitter with open stance, more open as a left-handed hitter.

Hit: Generally a gap-to-gap hitter that can handle both sides of the plate. More adept to impacting the baseball from the left side. Timing and foot plant can be an issue as a righty hitter. Just has a knack for putting the ball in play, finds barrels. Seems to produce more than the sum of his parts. Grade: 50

Power: More power from the left side of the plate. A bit of an ambush hitter in hitter's counts. Power is generated from loft and is almost exclusively pull-side. Beyond that, mostly a gap hitters. Lacks natural strength/barrel speed. Grade: 40

Field: Quick-twitch, livewire defender who gets to balls others do not on effort alone. Good range to his right and his left. Reliable glove. Arm is good, not great. Likely a second baseman at the next level. Grade: 55

Arm: Arm is tested constantly thanks to impressive range. Lacks velocity across the diamond. Internal clock can rush on him and throws can get away. Makes all the routine plays look easy. Some flash. Grade: 50

Run: Fantastic instincts on the basepaths and in the field. A grinder. Not a plus runner, but will steal more bags than anticipated thanks to good baseball mind and effort plus his ability to get strong jumps. Again, a guy that just outplays his total package. Grade: 55

Overall: Hayden Cantrelle is an exciting prospect for a number of reasons. He's got a lot of flash and flair thanks to quick-twitch motions and supreme instincts on the field. He's not the most gifted ballplayer on the field, but what he lacks in strength and explosiveness he makes up for in effort and smarts. He likely isn't a regular at the big league level, but the type of utility player that sticks around for a decade.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R-R
Acquired: 2020 Round 1
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Lean, strong upper body that showcases quick-twitch actions and fluidity across the diamond. Longer, strong legs. Lean frame with broad shoulders and wide core. Thinner neck, narrow waist and smaller forearms suggest the body should age well. Suffered knee injury in college that will be something to monitor. Some behavioral red flags as well.

Hit: Contact-oriented approach that, in his first two years at Miami, was an all-fields hitter. Some natural loft in his swing. Started tapping into more pull-side impact as he's aged. In a program known for striking out, Zamora limited his strikeouts on campus and was able to draw walks. Grade: 50

Power: Swing is catered for loft, but has yet to produce in-game impact. Some pull-side power, but mostly a gap-to-gap hitter at the collegiate level. Lean body suggests big mass may be hard to come by. Could tap into some home run power at the next level, but will likely need to rely on his approach and loft to get pitches to drive. Grade: 40

Field: Zamora has had moments of brilliance in his collegiate career on the dirt, and there's reason to believe that will stick around at the next level. He's quick to his left and to his right, and may have been the best infielder in the 2020 class when charging the baseball. Zamora was able to make just about every play at the position in 2018 and 2019. That said, he'd have mental lapses, failing to make truly routine plays at times. That must improve to reach his plus ceiling. This, coupled with the unknowns of a knee injury, leave some questions. Still, the ceiling here is substantial. Grade: 55

Arm: Zamora had one of the better arms in the 2020 crop, and there's no reason to believe that will have faded. Whether going into the hole or charging a chopper, he's well-tuned to make the play. Grade: 60

Run: An above average runner in college, it's presumed Zamora may have lost a step in his knee injury. At this stage, reports have suggested an average runner. Grade: 50

Overall: Zamora has the ceiling of one of the better defensive shortstops in baseball, with a hit tool that should buoy his big league profile. The off-the-field question marks and injury history gives scouts pause. There's reason to believe there's a big league regular shortstop here, but the bat will need to optimize.

Age: 18 yr
Height: 5-11

Hits/Throws: L/L

RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: High level athlete. Extremely physical body in a slightly compact frame. Quads and Forearms stand out at first glance. Wide shoulders, and chest shows room for growth as he matures. Tons of present strength, with plenty more to come. Has added over 20lb. since being signed in 2019. It's rare to see a 17-year-old with such physical maturity combined with plenty of projection left.

Hit: Steps into the box feet open and front heel slightly raised. Hands will sit high at the shoulder with the barrel angled at the backstop. Presents a wide base in a nearly upright stance. Will incorporate a small hanging leg kick into a toe tap throughout his compact swing with an advanced ability to keep his weight in his back side. Hands drift back and his lead leg gets down with authority while showing tremendous barrel lag through the zone. Head stays on the ball throughout, focused rarely wavers. Plus hand and wrist strength produce elite level bat speed and barrel acceleration easily, with more to project. Bat path is getting more optimized as he matures creating easy natural launch angles and impressive points of contact. Has shown an above average eye in the limited live ABs available, and an ability to work the ball to all fields without hindering his approach. Has yet to play in affiliated ball yet, but has shown the ability to pick up offspeed and will abuse a fastball. One of the most visual appealing swings you'll see in a teenager. There's a solid gap with present and future grades here with the lack of true game film, so it should be worth monitoring. Grade: 50

Power: Ball just explodes off the bat. BP sessions are a sight to see, including some light tower shots in Miller Park after signing last July. The natural loft his bat path creates combined with the simplicity in his swing allows Perez to tap into his power without selling out at all. Pull side power stands out, but shows home run juice to all fields. Has tapped into every bit of his raw power in-game and that should be a continuing trend going forward. If you factor in his above average foot speed, this could add some variance in his current and future power grades Grade: 55

Field: Perez will show his high level athleticism in the field. Will get a quick first step and shows aggression when tracking balls. Will take advanced routes moving in all directions and has earned rave reviews in his time in instructs and at the alt site this fall. Presents all the tools to stick in CF long term, but could be more suited in a corner long term as his frame develops Grade: 55

Arm: Will uncork big time arm strength with ease. Gets good carry on his throws and doesn't need to sell out. Will rush throws on occasion and lose some accuracy, but overall the profile will play at all three outfield spots Grade: 60

Run: Gets a quick first step out of the box and will reach top speed quickly. Doesn't take a long stride but covers ground with ease due to plus foot speed. Reportedly 6.6-6.7 runner in the 60. Speed likely to hold up as he ages due to his high level athleticism Grade: 55

Overall: Perez shows all of the makings of becoming a high level offensive OF with a cannon for a left arm. Could be the most tooled up player in the entire Brewers system at just 17 years old. Should develop into a solid average hitter with potential for 20+ HRs and potential for double-digit steals. The floor is currently very low due to the volatility of the age and profile, but the room for growth is immense. Advanced baseball IQ and makeup for his age. Big league bloodlines as the son of Venezuelan legend and 6 year MLB vet Robert Perez.

Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Listed at 6'4, 215. Tall, thin, lanky frame. Skinny lower half, still might be room for a little more muscle mass in the thighs. No remaining physical projection in shoulders.

Delivery & Mechanics: Sets up on extreme first base side of the rubber, creating tough angle for left-handed hitters. Intentionally varies tempo to mess with hitters' timing. Gets down mound well and generates plus extension. Exaggerated dip of front (right) shoulder just before release creates over-the-top arm slot that drives the whole profile. Plus on-mound athlete with fluid, whippy arm action.

Fastball: 88-91 MPH, occasionally up to 92. Plus-plus vertical movement; over-the-top arm slot enables a ton of backspin on heater and creates the illusion of ride. Pitch stays on plane and confuses hitters; most obviously effective when elevated for whiffs but also plays for called strikes in the bottom third of the zone from hitters who expect it to sink below the knees. Despite below-average velocity, it's an above-average pitch, evidenced by opposing hitters' poor swing decisions. Small knows this and throws his fastball at a very high rate. Grade: 55

Curveball: 72-76 MPH. Well below-average depth for a breaking ball this soft. Has a little bit of 1-7 action but is clearly his third pitch. Grade: 40

Changeup: 76-78 MPH. Inconsistent break; will get some sink when he stays on top but has a tendency to sail on him or even cut glove-side. Plus velocity gap off fastball (10-12 MPH) drives the effectiveness. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Plus athleticism, throws a high volume of strikes. Better control of fastball than secondaries; particularly adept at spotting fastball up and arm-side. Vertical arm slot can inhibit his ability to work glove-side but throws strikes with ease. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Small's one of the more fascinating pitching prospects in the sport. His fastball has elite vertical life that generates tons of whiffs despite pedestrian velocity. Small used it early and often his junior season at Mississippi State. Opposing hitters in the nation's best conference knew it was coming, still couldn't hit it, and Small rode one of college baseball's best seasons in recent memory to first-round status. Milwaukee limited his innings in his few pro starts after draft day in 2019. The cancellation of the 2020 minor-league season means we still haven't seen Small work through pro lineups three times. He doesn't really have a useable breaking ball, and that lack of repertoire depth could present a challenge for him getting deep into games (although his odd angle for left-handed hitters could help mitigate that). Already 24 years old, he should move quickly.

Height: 6-0
Weight: 173 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Athletic frame; Long limbs, high waist. Lean, borderline skinny. Shoulders a little wider than average. Very projectable frame. Room for 15-20 pounds of good weight. Longs longer than listed 6'0. Live, athletic body. Confident at the plate and on the field. Can be bothered by bad calls.

Hit: Upright stance with wide base, square, sits into the rear leg with moderate bend. Hands are eye-high at the back shoulder; solid rocking motion both in the hands and with the body. Low, quick leg lift used for trigger, drops in the same place -- more of an exaggerated step than a kick. Above-average bat speed. Flatter bat path. Comfortable in the box, patient with great feel for the zone; battles with two strikes. Doesn't expand often. Happy to wait on his pitch and take a walk. Line drive approach, looks to go the other way and doesn't lift the ball with regularity. Able to shoot the ball the other way with authority. Beaten by velo up in the zone right now, but has the bat speed and athleticism to handle it with an adjustment. Doesn't always square up balls he should drive and inside outs the ball often. Some swing and miss in the zone, but not much. Bunting needs work, looks inexperienced. Good hitter overall who finds ways to impact the ball solidly all over the zone despite some trouble with elevated velo. Works walks frequently, waits on a pitch he likes and swings to do damage, but usually goes to the opposite field gap. Excellent leadoff candidate. Grade: 50

Power: Live, quick twitch body produces above average bat speed. Raw power is average currently, but there's a chance he could get to above-average if he adds good weight - building blocks are there. Flat swing plane and opposite-field line drive approach really limit game power. More of a gap to gap, doubles and triples hitter right now despite having enough power to go over the fence pull side. Legs are an asset and will help him stretch anything not hit at a fielder into extra bases. There's significant room for growth here if he learns to pull the ball in the air with consistency, but definitely below-average unless that happens. Grade: 40

Field: Very good range to his left and right, good lateral agility; great instincts, smooth actions and transfers. Soft hands that make all but the toughest plays and even makes those on occasion. Good awareness on the field, anticipates well and gets to the right spot; gets into good position to throw. Makes a highlight reel play more games than not. Hustler. Looks like a natural middle infielder; no question he can stick at short. Grade: 60

Arm: Strong, firm delivery when set. On target often when set and from awkward body positions while on the move; can throw from all angles. Fringy carry from deep short when throwing off his back leg. Has touch when he needs it. Plenty of arm for the left side of the infield and accurate enough to make the most of it. Grade: 55

Run: 4.03, 4.09, 4.06, 4.13 H-1st; Good runner, moves well, gets up to speed quickly; long legs cover lots of ground. Legs out infield hits with regularity. Aggressive runner who looks to take the extra base when he sees an opening. Stolen base threat; gets solid jumps and has a success rate near 90% in his pro career. A true asset on the basepaths. Grade: 60

Overall: Twitchy, athletic shortstop with a major league glove and hit tool. Defense and ability to get on base will carry the profile and approach will determine how much of the ceiling he gets to. Currently a slasher who shoots line drives into the opposite field gap, but has enough pop to do damage pull-side if he tries to do so. Excellent leadoff candidate. Floor is a utility player and if everything comes together he's likely an occasional All Star.

RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Strong, muscled build with high waist and lower half strength. Broad, sloping shoulders with stocky core. Physique is fully-matured. Shows impressive bat speed. Explosive, twitchy movements in the box. Type 1 diabetic.

Hit: Swing tinkerer. Seemingly adjusted his stance every time I saw him. Tends to lean on a moderately-wide, open stance with higher hands. Has a tendency to get pull-happy in an effort to get into power. Front hip has shown to fly open in the past, though he's shown an understanding of that flaw and has shown ticks at the plate pre-pitch to keep that hip in the box. Swing plane can get flat at times. Hit tool benefits from plus, potentially double-plus speed. Quick out of the box. Floor is an above average hitter. Grade: 55

Power: Body and swing speed suggest big power. Batting practice is as loud as you can find at times. Swing plane inhibits loft. Pull-happy approach limits opposite-field, up-the-middle pop. Can get into breaking balls and fastballs on inside half for light-tower shots. Despite 60 raw, will need to adjust approach and swing plane if he's to reach that in-game. Grade: 50

Field: Has played every outfield position at UCLA. Speed plays at every spot and is a huge asset in corners. Arm is impressive, throws linedrives, though have had a tendency to sail up the line. Routes to the ball have been good, not great, though that may improve as he's stapled into one spot. It's a plus defender in a corner, potentially plus in center, maybe just a tick below. Grade: 60

Arm: Shows very good arm strength, throws line drives into the infield and to home that lack much tail or extra carry. One of the quicker catch-to-release mechanics I have seen. Incredibly quick to get rid of the ball. Capable of gunning down an advancing runner. A definitive asset in centerfield, would fit well in right field. Grade: 55

Run: Potentially a double-plus runner now, body seems to have the build of one that may age sooner rather than later. Thick upper body and stronger quads, glutes. Quick out of the box. Has had moments of being a reserved runner in the field. Could be argued it's 70 now, likely a plus runner in the next three or four years.  Grade: 60

Overall: There's a lot to like in Garrett Mitchell and he may just be scratching the surface of what could be. The power is the looming question mark. If he can work the swing to get into plus-power at the big league level, we're probably talking about a top five player at his position. If not, he has some Adam Eaton comps that feel appropriate.

Weight: 215 lbs

Acquired: 2016 Draft, Round 2
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Very tall, long athletic frame, not that dissimilar from the Dodgers Cody Bellinger. Long limbs, high waist, good strength and muscle while avoiding bulk. Runs well, moves well, loose athlete. Enviable hair follicles.

Hit: Changed setup mid-2019, crouching down to shrink his strike zone, while shortening the path of his hands. Sets up slightly open, with front toe offset, hands set by ear with bat movement approaching Sheffieldian levels pre-load. Lots of pre-pitch bouncing and movement, utilizes leg lift trigger mechanism, that's been toned down over the years. Natural loft to swing, old operation was reminiscent of former Cardinals prospect (and major leaguer) Colby Rasmus. Elite on base skills, running high walk rate throughout his professional career. At times approach bordered on passivity as he has one of the lowest swing rates in the minors. Made a conscious effort to improve in this regard upon reworking his setup in late June of 2019. Following these changes, Marsh was more aggressive, lowering his strikeout rate while improving his offensive production. Grade: 55

Power: While Marsh's former "Rasmus" swing was geared toward picturesque lefty shots in batting practice, his load was too long and often sapped away from Marsh's bat speed. After the adjustment Marsh significantly cut down the length of his load and became far more direct to the ball. This change unlocked a significant amount of pull-side pop, as Marsh saw his pull, flyball rate, and HR/FB all spike post change. Beyond that, he did all this while running one of the top five lowest infield flyball rates among players >300 PAs in the upper minors. This adjustment easily pushed his lower grade from fringe average to a strong average with some room to grow into above average. Grade: 50

Field: An above average everyday outfielder that can play all three outfield spots. Moves well coming in and going back, takes efficient routes and shows poise on tough plays. Good makeup speed and above average or better range. Marsh is arguably the best outfield defender in the upper-levels of the Angels organization and should push Jo Adell to his permanent home in left. Grade: 55

Arm: A right handed pitcher as a prep, Marsh has a strong outfield arm that plays better in the grass than it ever did on the mound. Good carry and accuracy, excellent strength. A weapon from the outfield. Grade: 60

Run: Above average runner that translates speed to base running and his defensive play. Strong base stealer, went 18-for-23 in AA and with his on base and contact skills could see plenty of opportunities to steal. Strong makeup speed and range in the outfield. Grade: 55

Overall: Marsh has blossomed from a physically blessed prep prospect to a complete five tool player on the cusp of the major leagues. His adjustment in approach, stance and path took him from a strong hitting prospect with supporting skills to one of the best overall outfielders in the minor leagues. He shows average bat to ball skills, good quality of contact, an elite batting eye and plate approach, and burgeoning power. To go along with these skills he's an above average runner, and a dangerous player once on base. He's a strong outfielder with the speed, arm, and confidence to play anywhere in the grass. Outside of his obvious tinkering there's very little to criticize within Marsh's game. Obvious style choices aside, a maxed out Marsh could resemble a young Charlie Blackmon.
