Hey, it is Rhys here, and by now, I hope you read our Yankee's Top 20 prospects. I couldn't hold myself back from giving you twenty reports with fantasy spins. That is why we are here; I have no set number of prospects, but think of this as the honorable mentions section or the credits after a movie that people totally stick around for, right? These prospects were not on the 20, but they were interesting to write about. These prospects can fall into any bucket one might be looking for, deep league stashes, close to the majors prospects who may contribute to the team in the following season, or prospects that we will get "what about this prospect" remarks on Twitter.
The Yankees farm system is a robust system filled with a few archetypes of prospects; they are interested in catchers who are primarily bat-first back-stops. They have routinely targeted these sorts of prospects for as long as I have been doing; I mean, two players who may contribute in the ALDS fit this archetype to a tee in Ben Rice and Austin Wells; admittedly, Wells is a better defender than most in this bucket of player. The most famous example of this sort of prospect for the Bronx Bombers is Gary Sanchez, who wore out his welcome with the most passionate fanbase in the league.
Antonio Gomez
That whole preamble above, to say one that doesn't get talked about enough, is Antonio Gomez, who might just be taking a page out of the Rafael Flores and Omar Martinez playbook. He is unlike other prospects in this archetype in that he might be an above-average defensive catcher with some burgeoning offensive upside. Ultimately, I didn't deem him worthy of being worth a report because he was Rule V eligible this past year and only just made it to High-A.
Another issue with Antonio Gomez, I promise I will start to say something positive about him, is an alarming 36% whiff rate, which for the level is well below average; he pairs that with some alarming chase metrics as well. However, I told you I would say something positive: he is an excellent defensive catcher, raising the floor on him. He moves well behind the dish, is a willing and able blocker of the ball in the dirt, and there is some refinement to his receiving. There is also some power, especially to his pull side, when he does make contact.
An encouraging sign is that since August 1st, which is just over 100 plate appearances, he hit .292/.373/.592. There isn't a noticeable swing change at play, either. He did struggle after returning from a triceps injury early in the season, but the last month of the season was encouraging.
A big thing here is spotlighting what the player could do to make the first update. A big thing for Gomez, and what he can work on, is the overall hit tool; a not-so-nice in-zone contact rate of 69% is alarming. He needs to cut back on the swing and miss if he will ever profile as anything more than organizational depth. Especially because Gomez does have plenty of 100 mph EVs in the tank and is actively looking to pull batted balls. He also needs to work on elevating batted balls because he did run a 46% ground-ball rate in High-A, but baby steps. Let's work on the contact first. If he starts to make more contact, he can tap into that power, one would hope, and at the very least, look like a semi-complete backup catcher.
