Sunday was filled with some great performances throughout all levels of professional baseball. Today we have Smada on MLB, Samuel Gomez on Triple-A, Trevor Hooth at Double-A, Grant Carver on High-A, and Matt Thompson at Single-A
Major League Baseball
Covered by Smada
💣💣 Agustin Ramirez, DH MIA (MLB)
2-for-5, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, K
The Double Dong gives Agustin Ramirez 3 HR in his first 5 games. He’s good… but I’m not sure he’s this good. He’s a player prone to streaks and someone who was fine, but not elite at AAA over the last 2 seasons. But the fact that he’s going to be playing nearly every day while maintaining catcher eligibility is a huge bonus for fantasy managers
Connor Norby, 3B MIA (MLB)
3-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI
Norby got his first HR of the season on a monstrous 108.2 mph pulled shot in Seattle. He’s picked up where he left off last season, hitting the ball hard but also expanding the zone quite a bit. Biggest positive in the small sample is an improved Z-Contact, biggest negative is he’s yet to take a walk in 35 PA.
🆕 Logan Evans, RHP SEA (MLB)
5 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
The MLB debut for Logan Evans ended in a win! He showed a deep arsenal of six different pitches and didn’t throw any over 25% of the time. Evans only generated 4 whiffs on 40 swings but the only real damage was Agustin Ramirez’s homer in the 1st inning. He had five solid starts in AAA to start the year and had done a great job limiting free passes and keeping the ball on the ground. At present he looks like a low-K streamer.
Dylan Crews, CF WSN (MLB)
1-for-3, HR, R, RBI, 2 K
After a really rough start to the season Crews has had a near-complete turnaround. Prior to 4/18 he was running a -8 wRC+ with a 30% K and since then he’s had a 237 wRC+ with all 4 of his homers and just a 17% K. A 15 HR, 25 SB season with upside in both categories looks more than possible.
Rafael Devers, 3B BOS (MLB)
2-for-6, HR, 2 R, RBI, 2 K
Another player who has rebounded from a horrific start, Devers now owns a 111 wRC+ through his first 30 games and the K% is already down to 27.7% after setting that MLB record. He continues to hit the ball incredibly hard and all his xStats call him really unlucky to this point. The in-zone contact still isn’t quite back to his previous career norms, but the rest of the profile looks solid at this point.
Kristian Campbell, 2B BOS (MLB)
2-for-2, 2B, 4 R, 2 RBI, 3 BB, SB
Such a fun stat line. On base in all 5 PA and scored 4 times, while adding another double and stolen base. The 156 wRC+ through 114 PA is beyond everyone’s expectations and a 20 HR, 15 SB rookie year with an above average OBP is the current target.
Yordan Alvarez, DH HOU (MLB)
2-for-4, HR, 2B, R, 3 RBI, BB
Yainer Diaz, C HOU (MLB)
1-for-4, HR, R, RBI
The struggling Astros duo both homered in the same day. Yordan is now up to 3 HR and an 87 wRC+ and Yainer is at just 2 HR and a 39 wRC+. Both players have been a bit unlucky but Yainer is at the point where he’s beginning to lose some PA where he would have normally DH’d. Under the hood it’s just a lack of hard hit balls, but given he doesn’t walk it’s about the entire profile. Diaz had a nearly identical month in May of last season, so there is certainly hope for a turnaround.
👟 Noelvi Marte, 3B CIN (MLB)
3-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI, K, 2 SB
Marte has really enjoyed his trip to Coors field adding another extra base hit and a pair of SB. The games still count, but I want to see him do some of this against teams other than the Rockies and Marlins.
Jack Leiter, RHP TEX (MLB)
3.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER 4 BB, 3 K
In Leiter’s return from the IL he had some trouble locating but the velo was back. We’ll give him a pass and look forward to his next start against the Mariners.
Hayden Birdsong, 3B CIN (MLB)
3 IP, 3 H, 5 K
I’m convinced that Birdsong just cycles through his pitches in each relief appearance to keep them fresh. Yesterday he led with the slider and had a 48% CSW with the pitch. The movement profile on a handful of the sliders lines up more with a cutter though, so he could be experimenting with one one game. In total he had a 41% Whiff and is now 92nd percentile for whiffs across MLB.
Andy Pages, LF-RF LAD (MLB)
4-for-5, HR, R, 4 RBI
It feels like it’s been a while since I’ve looked back at Pages and he’s turned the corner after a sluggish start to the season. In the last 5 games he’s gone 13-for-20 with 3 HR, 3 2B and a SB.
🚑 Tyler Glasnow, RHP LAD (MLB)
1 IP, H, 2 ER, BB, 2 HR allowed
Glasnow left during warmups before the 2nd inning with shoulder discomfort. It’s just another injury in what feels like a never ending list. Hopefully it’s not a major issue.
Chandler Simpson, CF TB (MLB)
3-for-4, 2 R, RBI, SB
We’ve gotten everything we’ve hoped for out of Simpson in his first 8 games. He’s hitting .400 and has nabbed 3 bases already. He continues to oscillate between hitting 1st and 8th and it’s likely he’ll end up at the top of the order consistently with how he’s been playing.
🍔🍟👟 Geraldo Perdomo, SS ARI (MLB)
1-for-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB
The month of Geraldo Perdomo isn’t done yet. He added a combo meal to get him up to 4 HR and 6 SB through his first 28 games. The hard hits, chase and zone contact are all peaking at the same time. While he’s still got well below average bat speed on the whole, he has increased his Fast Swing Rate% significantly year over year.
J.C. Escarra, C NYY (MLB)
2-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI
Congrats to Escarra on his 1st career big league homer! He was drafted out of FIU back in 2017 and was without a professional org after 2021. He played independent ball in 2022 and 2023, putting up eye popping numbers in the Atlantic League before getting a minor league contract with the Yankees in 2024. After a solid season in AA & AAA last year, Escarra broke camp with the Yankees in his age-30 season for the first time. In the small sample he’s shown an above average swing speed, with good contact and plate discipline. The AAA sample with a 13% BB and 15% K last year backs that. Escarra was heavy pull-side last year and has continued that in his 29 PA thus far. On another team with more opportunities I’d be interested in adding Escarra as a C2, but with Wells fully entrenched we’ll have to wait.
Triple-A Baseball
Covered by Samuel Gomez
Brett Baty, 2B NYM (Triple-A)
2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB
With Jeff McNeil coming off the IL, the Mets decision to send down Brett Baty finally came, despite a brief run of good performances. In his first game with Syracuse, he hit two doubles and a hard line drive that was caught. He’ll likely get one more chance with the Mets in the future, but if his bad offensive production at the major league level continues, he’ll be a change of scenery candidate.
Marcelo Mayer, 3B BOS (Triple-A)
2-for-3, HR, 2B, 3 R, 4 RBI, BB, K
Nate Eaton, RF-CF BOS (Triple-A)
4-for-5, 2 2B, R, 4 RBI
Mayer once again had a two-hit game. He’s picked up at least two hits in seven of his last nine games. He’s continuing to hit for a ton of power and I don’t think he’s too far off from making his debut. Eaton has been a sneakily good part of the Worcester lineup. He saw some time with the Royals in ‘22 and ‘23, but he struck out too much, which is still an issue today. He has a hit in nine of his last ten games and continues to play the majority of his games in center field. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to see a path to the majors for him in the near future with the Red Sox.
Matt Shaw, 3B CHC (Triple-A)
2-for-5, HR, 2B, 2 R, RBI
After starting 1-for-17 with Iowa following his demotion, Shaw has started to get going in his last two games. He snuck a ball inside the pole down the left field line for his first homer in the minors this season. I really hope he can perform and get back to the big leagues quickly, because the Cubs have a huge hole to fill at third and Shaw deserves another chance to do just that.
💣💣 Tim Elko, 1B CWS (Triple-A)
2-for-5, 2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, BB, K
Elko crushed two balls over 400 feet, one of them leaving the bat at 111 mph. He leads all Triple-A hitters in homers and OPS, but the White Sox opted to bring up Bobby Dalbec instead of Elko last week. If he sustains this pace much longer, there’s no excuse for the White Sox not to give him a go in the majors.
Jake Bloss, RHP TOR (Triple-A)
4.1 IP, 3 H, BB, 5 K
After three poor starts to begin the year, Bloss has turned in two consecutive quality starts since then. His high IVB fastball from a lower slot was effective and he pounded the zone with all of his offerings. I’d like to see the Blue Jays stretch him out a bit more going forward, since they took him out after only 81 pitches.
‼️Parker Messick, LHP CLE (Triple-A)
5 IP, H, BB, 8 K
Messick’s fastball-changeup combo was lethal. He has a violent drop-and-drive delivery that makes his diving changeup even more deceptive. His flat fastball only sits in the low-90s, but it still generated a 50% whiff rate coming from his lower release point.
🍔🍟 Otto Kemp, 1B PHI (Triple-A)
2-for-3, HR, 2B, R, RBI, BB, K, SB
Kemp has had a breakout this season in Triple-A. He’s seen a huge uptick in the power department, highlighted by his 415 foot homer in this game, and he’s continuing to play in spots all across the diamond. The Phillies have had a revolving door for their final spot on the big league roster and I think Kemp could get a chance once it opens back up.
🔜 Ranger Suarez, LHP PHI (Triple-A)
4.2 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 BB, 8 K
In his first rehab start, Suarez looked like his usual self. He missed some time due to back stiffness, but his pitches looked good and he was throwing everything. He’ll likely make another rehab start, but he could return to the big league club if Christopher Sanchez hits the IL with forearm soreness.
Gunnar Hoglund, RHP ATH (Triple-A)
5 IP, 3 H, BB, 5 K
Hoglund continues to excel every time he takes the ball. He’s started six games this season and is yet to give up more than two earned runs in an appearance. He was a bit shakier than his final line suggests, because he avoided getting hurt by some loud contact and wasn’t getting as many whiffs as he usually does. However, it was a good day overall and I hope to see him in the big leagues this year.
‼️Jacob Misiorowski, RHP MIL (Triple-A)
5 IP, 3 H, 9 K
