After skipping an the Daily Sheet yesterday to give some time off for Easter, we are back to the grind of covering professional baseball day in and day out. Today Samuel Gomez is on Triple-A, Nate Rasmussen on Double-A, Tom Gates on High-A, Matt Thompson on Single-A and Smada on MLB.
Let's get to it!
Major League Baseball
Covered by Smada
Shorter MLB portion of the Daily Sheet today as I’m trying to wrap up my first in-season dynasty rankings update!
🆕 Chandler Simpson, CF TB (MLB)
Saturday: 1-for-5, 2B, R, RBI, K Sunday: 1-for-3, SB
We missed Simpson’s debut since we skipped the Daily Sheet on Easter, so I’m going to pretend we didn’t and cover both weekend games here. Simpson’s first career hit was an oppo ground rule double off of a letter-high fastball from Devin Williams. His second career hit wasn’t handled by Paul Goldschmidt but it doesn’t look like it would have mattered as Simpson was likely going to be Fried to 1st base. After ending up on 1st base on a fielder’s choice in the 8th inning, Simpson stole 2nd base handedly for the first of his career. What’s clear is Simpson is going to make every ball-in-play interesting. He led off against a RHP in his debut then batted 9th against a LHP on Easter. For now it appears he’ll be starting everyday in CF and be given a real shot to stick. I’ll be keeping an eye on his contact rates in the early going. As for valuing him in dynasty leagues, an easy starting point comp right now is Xavier Edwards. On the one hand Edwards has already stuck, on the other, Simpson’s SB potential and long term viability as a plus-CF defender is much better than Edwards’.
Austin Wells, C NYY (MLB)
1-for-3, HR, R, RBI, BB
Was last year’s summer of Austin Wells real? His early line looks more like his full season 2024, which is fine but not spectacular. I’m liking the amount of PA he’s being given, but nothing here screams breakout. I’ll keep saying it for a while though, it’s early.
Noelvi Marte, 3B CIN (MLB)
5-for-7, HR, 2 2B, 3 R, 7 RBI, 2 K
The Reds scored 24 runs on 25 hits and Marte got a fifth of them. In Marte fashion he struck out in his only two non-hit PAs. This was his first homer of the season in 64 PA across AAA and MLB. He’s been up and recalled twice already from AAA and he’s yet to find regular PA in bigs, we’ll see if this game gets him more chances.
Drake Baldwin, C ATL (MLB)
1-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI
Whew 102.3 mph EV oppo on a line for his 2nd HR of the season… really impressed by Baldwin despite what looks like an average line over 46 PA.
🆕 Caleb Durbin, 3B-2B MIL (MLB)
0-for-4, R, SB
Durbin debuted on Friday with a couple of singles, then went 0-for-7 with a HBP over the weekend. He did manage to get his first career SB yesterday, which is what you’re rostering him for anyway. Durbin is a high-contact profile and has demonstrated that thus far, not striking out nor walking through his first 12 PA. Durbin has batted 9th against two RHP and one LHP and started at 3B in all three games, while also sliding over to 2B for the 9th inning after Brice Turang was lifted for a pinch hitter in a blowout. Oliver Dunn was transferred to AAA so Durbin should have full run at the hot corner moving forward.
Zach Neto, SS LAA (MLB)
1-for-3, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI
Neto is on the board with his 1st HR of the season (in the bigs at least). He was the only damage the Angels would muster off Justin Verlander. All systems go!
Sam Huff, C SF (MLB)
2-for-3, HR, R, 2 RBI, BB, K
Wow what a throwback. Huff was claimed off waivers by the Giants this offseason after 9 years in the Rangers organization. He’s always been able to put baseballs over the fence and actually has 20 HR over just 238 MLB career PA. But when you’ve got an extreme amount of chase and whiff you won’t do much else. Huff is strictly a backup catcher here but if you’re that desperate at catcher, maybe he can pop you a homerun every other week.
🍔🍟 Zac Veen, RF COL (MLB)
Game 1: 1-for-2, HR, R, RBI, SB Game 2: 0-for-4, 3 K
Veen notched his first career homer and stolen base in game one of the doubleheader! Unfortunately the sequel didn’t live up to the original. Thus far Veen has been completely overmatched at the big league level and the debut mirrors that of the guy he took over for in Jordan Beck. There’s always a lot of clamoring for the Rockies to play their prospects, but when they do, it often goes like this. Not to say Veen can’t turn this around nor become a solid major league player, but it’s more than likely he’s sent down soon for more seasoning.
Triple-A
Covered by Samuel Gomez
Marcelo Mayer, SS BOS (Triple-A)
2-for-5, HR, R, 3 RBI
Mayer hasn’t had a great month so far, but he now has three consecutive multi-hit games. He lifted a slider at the bottom of the zone and hit an impressive 414-feet homer to dead center. That was only one of three balls he hit over 100 mph in the game and it’s exciting to finally see him heat up.
Shane Drohan, LHP BOS (Triple-A)
4 IP, 3 H, BB, 5 K
Drohan hasn’t thrown many innings in his four starts, but he’s been excellent since moving from the bullpen to the rotation. He threw his slider more than any other pitch and attacked the zone with his low-90s fastball. Some of the underlying numbers point to future regression, but his walk rate is down and he’s giving up less hard contact than he has in the past.
Jake Bloss, RHP TOR (Triple-A)
4.2 IP, 6 H, 7 K
Bloss rebounded in a big way against a lineup that tagged him for seven earned runs in 2.2 innings in his last start. He got away with some hard contact against the fastball, but his breaking balls were working well. Most importantly, he didn’t give up a walk, which has been something he’s really struggled with this year and throughout his minor league career.
‼️ Blade Tidwell, RHP NYM (Triple-A)
4.1 IP, 2 H, BB, 9 K
After pitching well out of the gate, Tidwell ran into some trouble in his last few starts, but he got back on track in this one. His sinker-sweeper combo was lethal and it led to nine out of thirteen outs being by way of the strikeout. His sweeper got an absurd eight whiffs on eleven swings and he only gave up a single walk.
