The second week of college ball is in full swing and today we're covering Friday starters, the top draft hitters, and all the standout performances. We hope you enjoy the coverage of the 40+ players in this edition of the College Daily Sheet.
It was another dominant routine performance for the nation’s best pitcher as Jamie Arnold needed just 64 pitches to go five shutout innings against Penn on Friday night in Tallahassee. The potential top 5 pick continued to pound the strike zone and has yet to walk or hit a batter this season over his first 11 innings of work. Arnold did give up his first extra base hit of the year when he allowed a lead-off double in the second inning, but has only given up three total hits over his two starts thus far.
Jamie Arnold’s routine outing was overshadowed by Florida State’s offensive onslaught that was once again led by second baseman Drew Faurot. The Seminoles run-ruled Penn 24-2 in 7 innings while amassing 20 hits on the evening. 19 of those 20 hits were singles while Faurot provided the lone extra base hit– a three run blast to right in the bottom of the 4th that made it 17-0 in favor of Florida State. The junior middle infielder has four long balls in 2025 after only hitting six home runs during all of last year. Faurot is off to a torrid start and is now 13-for-25 with 16 RBI over his first five games. Teammate Gage Harrelson, who went 4-6 with two stolen bases, was an honorable mention today for the daily sheet.
Georgia Tech ace Tate McKee turned in another quality performance to start the year with five strong innings in the Yellow Jackets’ 12-1 thumping of the Marshall Thundering Herd. Although the sophomore right-hander gave up his first earned run of the season, he was able to earn his first win while only allowing three hits and striking out six. McKee only had 75 pitches on the night but with such a big lead, head coach Danny Hall opted to rest him for the final few innings. On the year he now has just one earned run given up over his first 10 innings and has started the season with a 0.90 ERA.
One of College Baseball’s biggest stars didn’t have the biggest opening weekend– despite a walk-off grand slam– but we knew it was just a matter of time before the star center fielder got hot. He followed up his quality midweek performance by reaching base against Marshall in all five plate appearances. After teammate Kyle Lodise walked to start the day, Burress blasted one down the left field line that landed on the ceiling of the John and Mary Brock Indoor Football Facility. It was another gargantuan home run for the legend in the making and was measured at an estimated 411 feet. The phenom added a double and finished a triple shy of the cycle as the Ramblin’ Wreck wrecked Marshall in 7 innings, 12-1. Freshman teammate Alex Hernandez was an honorable mention for the daily sheet after hitting his first collegiate home run– a grand slam– and driving in 5 runs.
