The first weekend of the College Baseball season came and went, and it was packed with outstanding performances from coast to coast. As we enter the first midweek slate, many games across the country have been canceled due to lingering cold temperatures and snow, forcing teams to defrost before resuming action.
That said, plenty of games are still on the schedule nationwide, and we’ll be keeping an eye on the top performers throughout the week.
Before diving into this week’s standouts, we’re introducing a new feature to the Daily Sheets; a recap of the Top 5 performers from the previous weekend who are firmly on the radar for the 2025 MLB Draft.
This segment will provide readers with an early look at each player’s draft value, round projections, and how they fit into draft boards, as evaluations continue to shift and evolve each weekend; both behind the scenes at Prospects Live and across the baseball industry.
It also gives our readers a unique glimpse behind the curtain, offering insight into how we assess top performers week over week and how their production impacts our draft boards leading up to July.
Below are five standout performers from the weekend who have already made their mark in the 2025 draft cycle.
Down in College Station, they call him Lord Tubbington, and he may just be the best hitter in college baseball. Although the first week of the season provided only a small sample size with Texas A&M’s three-game series against Elon, Jace LaViolette wasted no time making an impact.
He's shown elite power and improved plate discipline, crushing nearly every ball in play while keeping his strikeouts to a minimum. His plate awareness has been phenomenal, rarely expanding the zone. Already with three home runs on the season (including a Grand Slam), LaViolette is flashing 80-grade raw power to the pull side and plus grade to the rest of the field.
Simply put, he’s a physical force on the diamond, looking every bit the part of a future MLB middle-of-the-order bat. However, as the draft approaches, MLB teams will be keeping a close eye on two key areas of his game. First, he’ll need to lower his strikeout rate, which has hovered around 25% in each of his first two college seasons. Second, maintaining a healthy walk rate (BB%) while continuing to push his contact rate above 80% would help solidify his case as a top-three selection in July.
With the 1:1 pick in play, LaViolette is already making a strong argument as the top choice. If he continues his early-season dominance, the debate might not last much longer as he is a remarkable player and could be an OD or an ETA 2026 player for the team that drafts him. I would be surprised if he falls out of the top 10 overall in this draft.
